I took a number of classes from Professor Trout in the loved them. I sought to take as many of his courses as possible because I always learned so much from them even if I did not always receive an "A" in the course. He was always very helpful with both course work and mentoring -- he assisted with both internship and grad school chooses and apps.

He complains that no one is contributing to the class discussion when he dominates the class with his comments. By the time I dropped the class I was so sick of hearing about his book. Just to let you know; I asked him if he fished and he told me that he did not violate animals in his totem. He was completely and totally serious.

WORST CLASS EVER! IF YOU GET HIM....RUN! he makes no sense whatsoever, he grades based on italics and bolds vs content. Makes you write like 6 papers on how to write clear then fails you. He is a pompous jerk who doesn't want to teach, just wants you to get a tutor. Run and run fast.

He presents a challenge to the students intellectually and offers a refreshing style of teaching that makes the students actually want to succeed and realize that half-assing it like you can in most other classes won't be tolerated. He wants students to learn more than just literature, he teaches hard work and other qualities for success in life.

Trout was probably the worst prof I've had in the English department. He chooses not to teach using the actual literature we're covering, but summaries of that piece of literature. Even though I did well in the class, I thought it was completely pointless.

Wow, I'm glad that you all had a more positive experience with Trout than I did. I found him to be a very frustrating and overbearing prof. He would dominate class discussion and then complain that nobody was talking. Also changed the syllabus halfway through the semester so we had MORE work without giving us any credit for it.

This class was extremely time consuming and not worth it. In order to get an A I had to spend 3 hrs out of class for every hour in. However, if you do well, he lets you know which is always nice.

I didn't notice the twinkle in his eyes when he called on the hottest girls like mentioned in the previous comment... I know he loves Ashley Judd. Anyway, great teacher. He seems to really bring a lot to the table. I've learned so much and actually enjoyed most of the reading material - especially Farenheit 451. It's a tough class, but worth it

While he does a great job of making old texts seem relevant, he thinks too much of himself and too little of the majority of his students. I swear his eyes twinkled whenever he called on the hottest girl in the class.

Trout is one of those Prof that I sought classe to take from him. If you want to learn how to write and think critically he is the teacher. He is a cranky old man, but you can't help but like him.
