Comment:
This is a great course on US foreign policy since the end of the Cold War. The text and articles are excellent. You read a lot but never feel like it's too much. Dr. Stranges' comments on the readings are brilliant and very helpful and open things up for discussion. There are five position papers, a midterm essay paper, and final essay paper. Tops!

Great course taught by one of the best professors at NU. There is a lot of reading but it is very interesting. You get to look into the minds of America's leaders and thinkers. Dr. Stranges' exams are challenging but he is very fair in grading. The position papers are interesting and help build up your final grade. I learned a lot in this course.

Probably one of the best professors NU has to offer and certainly one of the best in both the history and political science departments. Dr. Stranges is so knowledgeable when it comes to history. His lectures are both interesting and informative. The class is not overly difficult. Put in a half decent effort and youll do fine.

This was the best course I took this semester by far. You can't help but learn a lot from him. He is so smart, an Ivy Leaguer, and a decent guy as well. His exams are not that hard and he will lift you up at the end of the semester if you went to class regularly and did the position papers. He taught my brother, so I know. Never mind the crybabies

Dr. Stranges is one of NU's best teachers. You learn a lot about leadership from him. His test are tough but he gives helpful study guides to prepare for them. He adjusts test grades to give you a boost and encourage you. He assigns short position papers that can also lift your grades. Ignore a few complainers who want easy grades. Take him.

I don't know how there are so many good reviews on this professor, but he is one of the WORST professor's I have ever taken. He is very nice man and I like him a lot, but not as a professor. His tests are VERY hard. Only a few questions on each test are from the study guides/notes. He is lecture heavy and gives us "notes." Don't take him!

Dr. Stranges uses presidential leadership as the key to understanding the US since WW 2. This is a lot more interesting than what you get in the usual textbook. His lectures are well organized, informative and entertaining. Exams are a bit long but very fair. He is a nice guy, very approachable. He did a great job even after we went online.

You will learn a lot in this course. Dr. Stranges is so knowledgable, very well organized, and crystal clear when he is lecturing. It's sad that we had to switch to online, but he steered us really well so that we could complete the course. His exams can be hard but they are fair. He is easily one of the best profs, and one of the nicest too.

I was just starting to enjoy this class when Covid-19 shut everything down. Some people are being harsh in their criticisms of not only Dr. Stranges but of many other professors. We need to give them a break! These are lecture/media based classes that were never intended to be delivered online. Thanks for your hard work Dr. Stranges!

He's one of the best Professors I've taken so far at NU. His lectures are very organized and interesting and he's a really nice guy. Sometimes there can be a lot of reading but other than that if you go to class regularly and do the readings you should have no problem getting a decent grade.

his lectures are very all over the place - you never know what you should be learning. His class was the only class that when switched to online due to covid-19 was even worse than the original class. He only utilizes canvas for messaging.. but don't email your assignments through canvas because its inconvenient for him.

I learned a lot in this class. The readings began with the founding fathers and went right up to the present day, and were meaningful considering all that is happening today in the U.S. Dr. Stranges encourages discussion and different points of view. To get a good grade you have to do lot of reading . But his exams and grading were very fair.

Can't speak to his history creds but this guy was terrible for a political science course. It's been year since I had the extreme displeasure of sitting through three unbearable weeks. I don't care about his political leanings, but not allowing students to meaningfully engage and not keeping class in order is a hard no for me.

Dr. Stranges is a special professor, so intelligent and knowledgeable. He makes the course interesting by showing how what happened in the past is related to what's happening today. He wants you to do well in the course. His tests are very hard but he adjusts the grades so that they are more normal.

He is such a sweet man. He knows what he's talking about. He gives you pre-filled note packets. There are two tests and then the final, and one presentation that can be solo or with 3-5 people. The test study guides are right out of the notes he gives you. My only complaint is that I'm not a fan of his teaching style, notes need 2 be more specific

Stranges is a solid professor. He knows the material front to back but because of that, I recommend that you do many of the readings outside of class because he has fairly high expectations about what you should know and understand. I didn't do most of them and did fine, but when completed, class is easier to follow. I advise against missing class.

Dr. Stranges is a really great professor and a great guy overall. He is fair with grading and class is very enjoyable. He makes the lectures very interesting. Another great thing he does is remain partisan about many issues and tries to stay as unbiased as possible. The tests for honors are a bit tricky but overall a great class & I will miss it.

Excellent teacher. There is a lot of reading, but if you do them all, you will know what is going on. No huge assignments, just 7 short essays (1.5 pages long each). Tests are kind of hard. Makes history interesting and promotes class discussion. Really liked having him for HIS 199 especially as I've heard horror stories about other HIS profs.
