An extraordinary human being -more Master, than traditional teacher. Yes, he does not suffer fools gladly; one must be mentally fit (and emotionally thick-skinned;) to keep up with the dizzy heights. As Nietzsche says: "In the mountains, the shortest way is from peak to peak: but for that you must have long legs." A true honor to be his student!

Professor Ganz taught his last two courses this semester and has now retired from teaching. He was an interesting, 84 year-old man with quite a life story and literary perspective. His class was much more of an English-Philosophy course than it was a Humanities course. He was a legend at GW and will be missed.

Comment:
The most amazing professor I've ever taken. The material he presents is entirely from his deep, semi-demented, kafka-esque psyche. He is legitimately thought provoking, attention grabbing, and has the humor only a cynical old man can project. Grades well if you read the books and show you care, which isn't hard. Honestly best prof at GW.

I was an economics student who ended up taking several classes from Prof. Ganz. He is insane and brilliant, and requires that you really, really, really think about huge amounts of material and expand your perceptions. I learned more in this class than in 90% of my other classes, but it was very difficult and at times painful and confusing.

Worst class of my entire college career. He is the most condescening, indiscernable, and boring professor I've ever had. He's about 107 years old and it's clear his sanity is almost completely gone. DO NOT take this class by any means, unless you want to plunge yourself into a dark pit of depression.

Unfortunately, due to his age, he's probably more than halfway gone... but still has more relevant things to say than the many 'professors' who never had it to begin with. The man will die teaching, and if you are lucky enough to have been there, cherish it for life. An unforgettable experience.

I was humbled by his incredible amount of knowledge that was seemingly endless & sprawled out over vast amounts of time way before and after the period we covered. I was also delighted to listen to the way he taught the material-very intellectually stimulating. And yes, he does tell many dirty jokes, but it all adds to an unforgettable atmosphere.

He assigns way too much reading between classes (250 pages of small font between Tuesday and Thursday) and as a result it makes it very difficult to keep up with the readings. Also, his 75 minute lectures become justlecture, because no one has done the reading and there is no participation. The curse words and grotesque stories are also not needed.

Wow, never thought an 80-year old professor, first existed at GW, second, was this ****ed! But no worries, he's totally harmless and his humor makes the class worth going to. From talking about the girls spraying their estrogen on him to the clothes he wears EVERY DAY OF CLASS, he is a very memorable character...take the class :)

I love this man! He is very into what he is teaching and brilliant! He may seem a bit nuts at first, but it all adds to the class. Grade based on midterm and final, know big concepts of authors, which he goes over tons of times but loves getting emails of questions or visitors and very willing to help you understand!

Very interesting, different sense of humor. Easy grader if you have a basic knowledge of the readings. Don't take this class if you are easily offended by crass humor.

DB Ganz is by far the best professor I have ever had. If you are not the average college moron, but actually want to learn something about literature, take his class. LISTEN to him, do not try to argue. He knows more than most of us ever will.

This man is one of a kind. His nicknames: Dirty Bobby, Reverand Ganz. Favorite quote from class: Get the uterus on that and find my glasses. He is to education what beethoven's opus 111 is to music. Brilliant.
