I can't say enough about him. I LOVE him and I enjoy going to his class. I will take his class over and over if I could. I'm missing him already before the semester is over. He is amazing and intelligent. He knows the material . His class is not boring, he makes it fun . Take his class , you won't regret. He thinks like a student , not a professor.

Great professor! I've had two creative writing classes with Watkins and they've been the two best classes I've taken at Mary Wash. He is definitely critical and can be blunt, but you will become such a better writer. Great sarcastic personality.

Without a doubt, the best professor I've ever had. No such thing as an easy A in his class but he is willing to help anytime. He made me look forward to going to class. He's real and honest and he truly cares. Hands-down, my favorite -- ever!

He is awesome, and makes the literature seem alive through games. Hilarious and cool, we did yoga in the middle of class once. But remember, READ THE MATERIAL.

I freakin love this man. This fall semester of 2010 he took the class to see the play Hair at the Kennedy Center in DC for FREE. He is a published author and he really knows what he's talking about. He's a great father and a genuinely wonderful person. He doesn't believe in test or quizzes. We rarely ever had them in class.

The best professor I've ever had. He's positively impacted my life and my career path more than any other. Honest, smart, caring, hilarious, thoughtful, insightful, he's always on point. Loves to see his students succeed and provides them with the appropriate advice and tools to do so. Absolutely wonderful person, writer, professor and friend.

He's kinda like that embarrassing uncle everyone has at their family reunion- you know, the one that curses, tells off beat stories, and generally goofs around for the hell of it? Considering most people would think of this as a cake class, I really got a lot out of this class. The 'platoon'-groups were fun and the assignments were insightful.

Creative Writing Summer 2007. Best class ever. He expected adherence to assignment guidelines and knew when effort was applied to the assignment. Loved the class, loved his humor and am sad I won't be taking any more classes with him at UMW.

He pushes you, and he'll make you a better writer, but honestly I dreaded going to class. His view of what good fiction is is very limited. It's all about his personal tastes. I felt discouraged from being creative and from writing what I like instead of what he likes. Can also be very harsh in delivering criticism, though he's nicer out of class.

The Vietnam literature was interesting enough but I didn't really learn anything substantial. Watkins is CRAZY, though in the best way. Really awesome guy who tries to make class fun while teaching. Definitely take anything with him because he's just a great person.
