Comment:
Briggs is not singularly one thing that students like to whittle professors down too. He has high standards, difficult and nuanced assignments, and is the best professor I've ever had. Gracious, flexible and sincerely passionate, he is a closed circle of learning and teaching and it's a joy to benefit from his curiosity and care for the material.

Really vague expectations for assignments and essays. Hardest class I've taken at UCR so far.

Professor Briggs is amazing, if somewhat intimidating. I took him for Milton; he has a brilliant mind and I would have never been able to see beyond the surface of the text without his points. Lots of writing but he is very helpful and his office door is always open. The only thing that sucked was that his class was early! BAH! Im night owl Briggs!

Professor Briggs is brilliant and always has something interesting to say. If you are willing to work with the texts and really commit yourself to learning something, you'll have a great experience. If you want to take an easybreezy class, this might not be for you. The readings are sometimes lengthy or difficult and class discussion is encouraged

Briggs helped me become a much better reader and writer. He is patient, kind, and he is an excellent, insightful reader who notices the most intriguing things in the reading. He sounds like he's boring, but when you pay attention to what he's saying, he blows your mind with his awesome insights. Take his course, work hard, and learn a great deal!

To be frank, I found him to be fairly boring and useless when it comes to being clear in his discussions. He focuses on one subject and applies it for the whole quarter... If you are interested in Shakespeare, I advise you all to take him. If not, avoid the class and take a different subject.

If you truly love literature and want to give your brain cells a work out. Then I recommend Dr. Briggs. I had him in a Milton class as a freshman and the experience was remarkable. He is not only intelligent but manages to get a laugh out of the students now and again. This was definitely a class that was worth my time and Dr. Briggs made it so.

You dont really need to buy the book. He will give you a website that has all of the text on there. The discussions are pretty boring unless you are into the material and contribute. The postings are mostly opinion so they are easy. Overall a nice professor.

briggs is an excellent professor with a brilliant mind and very knowledgeable on his material and most all literature. i guess people are just frustrated by his intellegence and just want an easy A. if you are one of those people, one of those people who does not enjoy an insightful lecture, then maybe english isn't your subject. briggs is awesome!

Briggs is erudite, reverent of the course material, venerable and above all, one of the few professors at UCR that deserves the title. I'm honestly scratching my head trying to comprehend the negativity of the previous comments. Caveat Emptor: If you are afraid of hard work and would prefer to skate through your higher education, steer clear.

Worst teacher I have ever had at UCR. Absurd quizzes, absurd final. The final was the hardest final I have ever taken in my life, all due to his inability to teach, answer questions, or deviate from his "old school" ways. I got an A because I aced the papers, but I seriously failed the quizzes and the final. DON't TAKE BRIGGS!!!!!!!!!!

O man, stay away. Going to class was pointless. I am an English major and I was contemplating switching majors because this lower division class gave me such a headache. He's a nice guy I just think that someone else would be better to teach this class

Obscure things he does: tells us that the quiz will not have any interpretive question yet makes an all interpretive short answer quiz with a 15 minute limit, never supports his claims, make obscure metaphors (he slaughtered Beowulf), talks in low voice on important parts, has an attitude when u ask him a question, admits he can't answer his own ?s

He is by far, the worst professor I have ever had an english class from. He repeats things directly out of the footnotes. He speaks about completley irrelavant topics, is unclear about what he wants you to learn and gives quizzes that change in format every week. Avoid this class at all costs.

HAs a great way to make students see things in the text that were not obvious before, however he does cause students to fall asleep. His quizzes were kinda hard. Tons of reading to do for the class in addition to two 5-7 papers.

Briggs embodies the essence of the term 'English Professor.' He is eloquent, erudite, and a whole host of other positive adjectives. At least as far as concerns UCR, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more thorough and knowledgable individual. I always looked forward to his class. I can honestly say that I came away from his class a changed student.

Prof Briggs reminds me of a venerable old British scholar, in a good way. He isn't the most exciting lecturer and he has the tendency to interrupt students before they finish talking. But he's a nice teacher overall and I've found an even deeper appreciation of Lewis's dymanic writings.
