Comment:
I took Booth's Shakespeare class, and it was amazing. The whole course consists of writing three essays, one of which is optional and everyone gets an "A" on even if they opt not to write it! He kind of reads his lectures but he doesn't "psychoanalyze" the play. He looks at the structure and patterns. Very interesting! Best english class ever.

Professor Booth was awesome, but he's not for everyone. I am a biology major, but had an interest in Shakespeare so I took his class. For the first few lectures he was kind of dull, but I think that was to get some people to drop the class. His deadpan humor and brilliant insight kept me coming to class.

The key to a good grade in Booth's classes is to attend class. Just attend class and pay attention to him (even if you don't read all assigned works) and you won't have trouble writing the papers because you'll know exactly what to talk about.

The more I attend this class, the more I love this guy. He's old, so his lectures are kind of slow, but I love the way in which he looks at literature: as art. He's funny and he feels like school ruins the enjoyment of literature... therefore, he doesn't give a midterm or a final. He just wants you to appreciate the readings. Small workload btw!

My favorite professor; he changed my views about Shakespeare, literature, and art. He helps students realize that great art is fun and exciting. Completely down to earth and not the least bit pretentious. Take ANY class that he teaches to understand WHY we value literature, WHY Shakespeare is great, and WHY some works last while others do not.

This was easily my worst experience ever at Cal. He is almost impossible to understand, hard to follow, does things differently than every other professor in the department. . With three papers "as long as they need to be", he might be good for some. Approach VERY carefully, but I'd recommend not at all for your own sanity.

Comment:
Easy, stupid class, only tripped up by Booth's enthusiasm to lecture in dense, convoluted prose. The entire argument of the course is well put in the intro to his book Precious Nonsense. The rest of the book has his best examples. Don't expect to get anything out of lecture -- Booth has too much fun being combative there. But it can be fun.

Prof. Booth is (as the reader put it) a "renegade" in the aesthetics of verse. He will confuse and frustrate you, but every so often you will get this moment of lucidity and understand completely what he is saying, and it is so worth it.

I entered the class full of expectations, and stayed in a state of confusion for the first month, but that eventually subsided. Grading is based on 3 papers. Go to office hours for Prof and GSI. Don't expect an easy A from this class. Invest a little time and effort, and you'll really enjoy it. Highlights of the year: the "Go Dog Go" Lecture

Great teacher with a great, yet unorthodox point of view about Poetry. Even though I was a bit hesitant to go along with his explanations, I now can see that was right. More than that, he was funny, original and understanding, not to mention very very lenient with the workload.

Professor Booth has a different approach to teaching. You may say something out of the top of your head, and he'll catch it and make you think about what you just said. He is more interested in saying what you think than saying what it is you think you are supposed to say. Very intriguing course and it's a skill building course.

I took his Shakespeare seminar and it was an awful experience. He made at least half the class cry and had a totally incomprehensible standard for what he wanted from his class. I do hear that his large lecture classes are completely easy, but stay away from the seminars!!!

He is one of the best ever. We read "Go dog, go" in class. Who does that? Only someone who is so unbelievably brilliant that regular minds cannot comprehend his ability to unwind the mundane into something grand. I never thought I could write a 5 page paper on 4 lines of poetry.

Stephen Booth is the most unorthodox Professor I've ever had. What at first seems to be a curmudgeonly nature, is really his brilliance. Very entertaining for open-minded students!

Has the gradiose fantasy that, unlike other professors, he's the sole distributor of the "the truth" about literature, and if you don't agree, you're "intellectually immoral" (his words). Like a cult leader, expects complete adherence to his teachings. In short: Needy. Requires student worship. Ick.

Comment:
The way he presents his ideas in lecture is generally boring even though his ideas are great (he does have his funny moments though). Overall, his class is a must take because it gets you thinking about more than just theory and content analysis that other classes over emphasize.
