Great! It's an easy course, but you still learn a lot. No quizzes or tests. Exams are short projects. Attendance counts. Love his teaching style. Stress free. Got a high A with minimal effort.

I worked as lab assistant to Marvin for 2.5 years. and worked in the field with him as an undergrad. Marv is an enigma, no doubt. Most people can't figure him out. Those who take the time, KNOW he is a GEM! If you're a lazy child waiting to be force-fed, look elsewhere--he teaches you to fish! One of the top influential professors in my life.

Comment:
Lectures are slow and boring, day in and day out. Asking him a question during class gets him totally off his train of thought, and he seems not to appreciate curiosity or a challenge. Sometimes he asks things to purposely confuse the class, to see if anyone catches it, and I imagine most students walk away from class still confused.

Comment:
I'm not sure whether or not he is knowledgable because he never lectured, even though it was a lecture class. He often spent the class staring awkwardly at the class after he posed a vague question. We had to teach ourselves and write the tests. Very disappointed in this class. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT TO LEARN!!!

I enjoyed this class, but it was hard to follow along, and you never really knew the grade you had until the very end when he would email you what your grade was - no explanation on how it was derived or anything. He is very vague in what he expects you to understand. Almost impossible to make an A!

Dr. Kay's knowledge of American Prehistory is great. His ability to keep focused on the subject at hand makes learning the material very easy.

fairly easy going guy. he has lots of knowledge, and a super dry sense of humor. if he is unclear, ask him questions! very student friendly exams, and offers options for extra credit. however, class attendance helps in this class.

He definitely knows his stuff, however, doesnt know how to teach it. I was never sure what I was supposed to learn form his lectures and never knew what was expected of me when it came to assignments. He is extremely nice but I would never suggest him as a teacher.

He was by far the worst teacher I have ever had!! He is obviously very knowledgeable in his field but was not capable of communicating that knowledge to the class. He was not clear at all with what he expected from us. He seemed out of it most days and usually unable to clearly answer any questions asked about his lectures. He should retire!!

Great lectures, photos from his own digging, lots of pictures. Take notes during lectures, the powerpoints may not be posted until the end of the semester. He's truly enthusiastic about archeology, and has made major contributions himself.

He is obviously a very knowledgeable man, and is quite passionate about his field of interest, but his course was poorly developed. It was interesting, and I did learn from it, but he did not seem very concerned with communicating his expectations with his students or with doing his best to help his students succeed.
