He is the worst professor I have had here. Just reads right off the powerpoint for lecture and makes it so hard to pay attention and want to come to class. He lost 2 of my assignments and i emailed him 4 times and talked to him in class twice about it and he never fixed it so it ended up dropping my grade. 4 exams and he does curve them.

He was a decent professor but NEVER responds to emails. I emailed him over 10 times with no response (yes I used the right email). Exams are tough but he usually gives a curve. Has small easy assignments that are 100pts added together. Overall with medium effort you should get an A. Always read the chapters and powerpoints.

This class is definitely a class where you have to teach yourself. His lectures are super boring, all he does is read off his powerpoint slides and there always at least 60 slides per powerpoint. Hes a super nice guy, but not a good teacher. Your main grades are 4 tests and the final is not cumulative. He also gives huge curves on tests.

Largely reads off of a powerpoint. One of those classes where you won't do much but be bored in class. I prefer active interaction with Profs & students (keeps me awake). Memorization heavy, long exams (3 + final). Overall a ton of information you have to somehow retain quickly. (If you're premed, get used to it.) Not a bad choice for Micro though.

AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS especially for lecture. As an average B student I can say he is awful. Don't be surprised to see 100+ slide powerpoint lectures and for him to read word for word, he gives little explanation for these. Your grade is 4 exams and no extra credit. Many errors on exams & no help at his office hours. NURSES-DON'T TAKE

I was very nervous for this lab at first but Dr. N was great! He was very relaxed during labs and always willing to help. Exams were kind of specific but if you study you will have no problem passing. The unknowns were ALOT EASIER than I thought it was going to be. Labs were never the full 2 hours either

Worst Professor I have had at GVSU. His tests always had errors and was not interested in hearing how you interpreted a question. His tests are very vague and extremely unclear so misinterpretation can cause a wrong answers. I am a strong student and struggled to receive an C in this course. I would warn all pre-nursing majors not to take him!

Prof Nieuwkoop is definitely the worst prof I've had at GV. He never replied to any emails and told me he doesn't know how and told me to come anyways when told i couldn't make office hours. Multiple errors on exams and gets really offensive when pointed out. Questions are super vague. Can't give clear explanations. DON'T WASTE UR TIME!!

Yes, he is nice and so sweet but if you want to learn something or get an amazing grade, this probably isn't for you. Personally, I wasn't very interested in the material so maybe that is why I didn't do good but his tests are hard and the lectures are just him reading off his powerpoints. You have to work for a good grade.

Professor Nieuwkoop is a very kind, caring man. This was a VERY tough course, but I would guess that it is difficult with any professor. You will need to read the book and study your butt off outside of class, but if you put in the effort and attend lecture, you should do well! Also, he offered a generous curve at the end of the semester!

For a public health class, I think he made the exams a little harder than it needed to be, but over all he rarely assigns homework. You only have to do 10 assignments through out the semester and they're pretty easy.

He is a very good professor and I would suggest taking him. He cares about you as a student and will go out of his way to help you out. I would love to take him for lecture. Microbiology is a tough class, so I don't believe the hard exams are just from him.

PPT slides have very basic information and you won't do well if you only study those. Read the book, study the chapter reviews, and use Mastering Micro. You will think tests will be easy because he provides old exams for studying and tells you that questions will come from chapter reviews, but you need to know much more that to do well.

AVOID if possible. Unfulfilling, difficult. Lectures are a complete waste of time; he just reads from the PPTs, which are posted online. Don't go to class. Scrutinize the text and reference the PPTs to ensure you learned about the topics presented. He expects a total understanding of the text. Grade 4 exams (very hard) + 15 hw quizzes (easy)

He makes the exams much harder than they need to be. Since he only grades the exams for your grade, it's very easy to suffer in this class. There is no extra credit, assignments, or anything. You receive no credit for going to class, the only points are on the very difficult and specific exams.

Terribly nice guy, however, unless you have hours every day a month before each exam to study and have outstanding memorization I promise you will not get an A. I had to take this class for the nursing program. I'm mostly an A student with an occasional B and I struggled to get a C in this class. And that's even after studying my ass off.

Tests are going to be your worse nightmare if you put them off, study all the charts and little details. Anything is fair game, if you think you won't have to know it, think again. He doesn't help much if you need something further explained form what he previously said. Do not put this class of for studying for.

He seems like a nice guy, but his exams are pretty hard, very detail oriented. Does not give study guide or learning objectives. You have to read the book, and do not cram for his exams because you won't be able to memorize everything. Get a tutor. Don't wait for the second test to do well, you need the first test grade to help

For lab this professor gives impossible tests. You have to know each and every bacteria and all of the results on top of all other information. Nice guy but did really badly in his lab despite knowing how to do labs etc.

He is funny. Had the lab with him too and that was great. Lecture in all the sections is tons of material- that is the hardest part. Strongly suggest making study notes from your class notes- condense them. Noticed some of the questions from HW and textbk. Good at explanation, long lectures.
