In this class, you have to wrote what he and he alone wants. Grades you on how much he likes your script as if he is script god.

Dudley is a joy, despite being somewhat worn and world-weary after 30+ years on the job. He has a way of doing things that works for him and he goes through the practiced motions with care and attention to detail. Grade-wise, nail the formatting and you should be fine. Bonus if you're original, funny, and take his thorough feedback to heart!

It's playwriting. You will write a 30 page play. If that sounds like too much writing (7 pages of a script a week), leave now. If not - take the class. The amount of one-acts we read (21) seemed a little excessive, but in the end it wasn't a big part of the grade. Dudley is great and I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested.

Comment:
Dudley can be offensive and is generally blunt, but in turn you can be blunt too and call him out. He gives really good and detailed feedback, but be prepared to kill your darlings because he will do that for you. Format is pretty important, but it's pretty easy to get an A or A+ on that. Overall, you either like him or hate him.

Comment:
Do not take this class if you are not a theatre major. He does the absolute most, and is very wordy when it comes to explaining things. He does not care if your play is good, if it's not what he wants you will FAIL! I really did not learn anything.

As long as you don't mind a lot of direction and very specific instructions, Dudley is great. Though, I was the only one who liked him in both the Dramatic Writing classes I took. My learning patterns and his teaching make for a good match.

Dudley is a very helpful professor. I've had him for both Dramatic Writing and Design, and in both classes, he spends much of his time helping his students do their best. He's not disrespectful like some people have said, but he does sometimes have a wicked sense of humor. Unless you're a fragile princess, you'll do fine in his class.

I had him for a number of classes, and he was my advisor, and he taught me in shop for work study. Dud is the Man! He was really an amazing, knowledgable professor, and he made learning about all aspects of theater really fun and interesting. He clearly really cares for his students and pushes them to be their best.

Comment:
The singularly most pretentious theatre teacher I've had to date. Teaches formulaically in a creative field, stresses format over content. Basically wants you to write a play that he likes, not necessarily one that is good. I understand emphasis on performance pieces, but it shouldn't negate thinking on a deeper level. Contradicts himself often.

I took this professor for Intro to Theatre, Design for the Stage I, Playwriting I, and Playwriting II. He expect alot out of his students, and he will be blunt if he suspects that you are not giving an assignment your all. However, if you follow his instructions and really try your best in the course, you will learn a lot. Best teacher ever.

I am a theatre lover, so I might sway a bit towards the happy side. He is a good professor, he knows a lot and can teach you a lot, but a love a theatre is very helpful. He is hard to deal with because the things he says seem a bit harsh. As long as you can look past his hard exterior and not always take him too seriously, you will learn something.

He speaks to me like I'm an idiot. I'm an English Major by trade and he seems to look down on those. He comes at the class from the theatrical standpoint, so if you're not a strong theatre person...DON'T TAKE THE CLASS. I don't know what I did, but he thinks I'm stupid.

I learned a great deal from this class and am very proud of my work. He is very particular and pays close attention to detail and punctuation/grammar. It's a straight-forward class and you know what's expected of you. If you are looking for an easy A, though, this isn't for you.

I like Dudley a lot, but his class is NOT easy. It takes a whole lot of work, and you have to do a lot of research or I did, at least. I learned a whole lot from that class, and have lots of really nice looking scenic/costume designs to show for it. I am very proud of the work I did.
