Comment:
Dr. Porter made this class unnecessarily difficult by grading papers excessively tough. He took off points from my papers for the most subjective reasons. His lectures are fine but this class really shouldn't be as difficult as he makes it.

Advice for this class Get a bible Get on your knees Start praying Unless you are a writing savant, he will find a problem with your paper, even if it is about YOUR experience. The help he gives is extraordinarily vague and cannot even really be called "help". Good luck.

Mr. Porter is a great teacher and his class is very enjoyable. He is very enthusiastic about helping his students become better writers. He is always willing to give advice, feedback, and willing to meet outside of class. The only grades are participation, 4 papers, and a final presentation. He allows time to prepare for papers.

Grades based on whether he "likes" the paper and not on an actual scale that develops each persons unique and individual writing skills. Received poor grades for doing work and participating while others he had a better personal relationship with or felt bad for received great grades even with their lack of participation inside the classroom.

Great professor! He is eager to give extra help with every assignment. He is always accessible and will even meet outside of his office hours to read and edit your papers before you turn them in. The only thing about his class is that participation is huge and worth more than most assignments, but it is not hard to do. Just do the reading.

He is a good professor and his class is interesting. There a lot of in-class discussions and I recommend participating as much as possible. He's very willing to offer help with papers and answers any questions that you have.

He's an okay professor, you do a lot of class discussion on the readings, and the participation grade comes from how many questions you ask or how many times you contribute to discussion, so always have something to say. Papers can be a little difficult because his directions aren't always clear, but if you go to office hours you'll do fine.

Professor is a nice guy. He gives good feedback on papers and actually wants to help you improve your writing. Attendance is mandatory and participation matters. Class is required by the university so you might as well take it with Professor Porter.

Dr. Porter seemed difficult at first, but the more I listened to him and took his advice for my writing I began to see myself become a much better writer. There are no surprises with him, and his lectures make you feel like you are learning rather than mindlessly writing and falling asleep. If you're willing to put in the work I recommend him

Mr. Porter is a really clear-cut instructor and a nice guy. He knows exactly what he wants to see, and he does a good job of telling you what to do to fix papers. Some papers are graded rather harshly, others are easy A's. Go to his office hours, and speak up in class. Might not be the easiest ENG 101, but if you try, you'll get an A or B no prob

There are five papers in this class, so if you're decent at writing it isn't too bad. He is willing to help and answer questions if you take the time to ask. Class isn't too difficult, but you have to do the work.

Very helpful guy, english classes are normally a bore but this one wasn't bad as classes always had in depth discussions about readings and questions we had for his papers. I would recommend taking him, but he does grade fairly strict on writing assignments.

I went through the trouble of joining this website to accomplish one thing and one thing only -- to warn others about choosing to have Porter as your teacher. His head is miles up his rear, and he thinks he's made of gold. ENG 101 is the most important class in the world according to him. If you want to at least tolerate ENG 101, avoid Porter

He is a very informative teacher, when he wants to be. There were a couple of instances where he would not tell me what was wrong until I received the graded final. Make sure you attend his office hours and involve yourself in the class, he'll get you otherwise. It is a good class to take, but be sure to take care in what you write.

Porter is a very helpful teacher, if you want him to be. That means attending his office hours for clarifications. On major papers, it is important to address your problems specifically with him. If you take his help, you will get better grades.
