My attendance wasn't that great and I still got a good mark. If you're nice to him, and treat him the way he wants to be treated, you'll do fine. Smiling helps too.

wow what a great prof! ceramics is definitely a difficult course to get used to if you are inexperienced. but after taking this class I have high respect for the art. Steve is very knowledgeable. He was a mathematics major so he knows all about the technical aspects of glaze and clay. will grade you better if you do extra work and show up for class

Comment:
He sometimes plays favourites and it can be difficult getting help if you're not doing something he's interested in. Also: his grading might not match the quality of work presented and his written feedback sometimes conflicts with what he's said during critiques. He can be very pushy and sometimes gets angry if you choose your own ideas over his.

He's open to debate during critiques and he covers a wide variety of contemporary ceramic work during his class. He's also reasonable when it comes to marks, rewarding regular attendance, willingness to experiment, class participation, and any extra effort. Definitely, one of the best courses I've ever taken.

He's got a thing for attendance. If you do not come to class, he will grade you poorly, even if you try hard. But he values students who come, and try. One of the best teachers I've had. Very helpful, and willing to listen, with a wealth of knowledge.

hey pushes his students.. which is good..but plays favoroutes and marks on a bias. If you don't do what he likes you will get a bad mark, as well as Will not talk to you in class if he does not like you... and beware if your stuff resembles anything "crafty" (which is not brown and woodfired).

very smart, knowlagble and very "pushy". He will push you in the direction he thinks you should be going in. Which in some cases may not be the path you want to take... but often enough you'll have more fun doing what he suggestes. He is a little intimidating but once you get used to his ideas and he gets used to you - you'll do fine

A wealth of knowledge. This is one of if not THE best professor I've had in my 6 years at the U of M. If you're interested in ceramics and have the oportunity to take a course with him, do. It just might change your life.
