Comment:
Bouton's lecture style is so dry. There's only one exam: a final, 6 quizzes (15 MC) and 4 HW assignments (short answer). There's no opportunity to earn easy points. Nothing is graded on completion. Love ending this class with a B+ when I ended much harder classes (managerial accounting) with an A+. Nothing I could do about it either. Avoid 111.

Nothing this man says makes sense. All he does it talk about his own experiments and does not teach. Would not recommend. Homework is too hard and I don't like it.

This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken at UVM. Material was taught so horrendously, they made us pay for a stupid TopHat subscription when we all already owned iClickers, and every test is fully multiple choice with horribly worded questions and responses. PLEASE steer clear of this class if you have the option to!!!

Prof. Bouton is not a nice guy. He routinely was rude to students during class and demonstrated his knowledge with excessive arrogance. This class was the hardest class I've ever had to take at UVM. The homeworks are total BS - you can spend hours and not do well. Same with exams. I cannot recommend this course.

PSYS111 is very dry... only took the class because I had too and honestly hated every minute of it. Bouton and Green tag team this class, and Green was so much more clear. Bouton is very judgmental and unapproachable. He makes class a competition, and if someone asks a question he answers with sass.

He really knows his stuff. He explained things wicked clearly- if you pay attention, everything makes sense and flows very well. If you're only half-interested, you may find him dull, but if you're there to learn the material, he's the guy for you. Exams aren't super easy, but not tricky either- pay attention, do the reading, and you'll be fine.

I really roasted Mark for PSYS 111, but in a 200 level he really shines. This is his subject area of choice and his knowledge in the area really shows. I recommend sitting towards the front if you do take his classes though because his voice is pretty soft. Send him an email if you need help, when he responds he's a great resource.

Seems like a normal guy when you first meet him, but Professor Bouton is more likely a hyper-realistic AI who is gathering data on animal behavior because he doesnt understand human emotions.

Mark, while a difficult class, he makes the information easy to understand and offers up clarification when students are confused. He makes the information seem fun and interesting while overall he is just a really nice guy.

Comment:
In this particular course, Mark Bouton was somehow the better lecturer of the two. The already dry material was made drier by both he and co-lecturer John Green. Bouton had occasional moments of comedy, but on the whole was uninspiring and the homework assignments were more frustrating than helpful.

Mark is one of the experts in this field of learning theory, and it is very clear that he knows the material and history extremely well and it still interests him. This is no easy class by any means, but if you are willing to put in the time and thought, you can gain and learn a lot more in this class than many on campus.

LCB was taken with Bouton and John Green. I actually enjoyed Prof Bouton more than Prof Green, but the exams are definitely difficult. The textbook is actually relly helpful, although theres a lot of reading.

Rude to students, sometimes won't even answer their questions. Exams are hell, they are designed to trick you. Boring lecturer, you will fall asleep. John Green, his co-teacher was better, he wasn't rude, but just as boring.

Honestly, Professor Bouton is a great researcher but it simply doesn't translate in the classroom. You can tell he is knowledgeable in this area of psychology, however the way in which he presents the material is confusing and dry. Then there are the tests, worsts tests I have ever taken. If you can avoid this class with this professor.

It took me a bit to appreciate Bouton. He seemed at first to be dry and a little cold, but he really knows what he's talking about and has done some really significant research. The material in this class is relatively complicated, but Bouton explains it well. He assigns his own book, which often annoys me, but it's one of the best in the field.

He will show you 3 research studies and then tell you that the same concept was used in all of them. He will speak about nothing but research studies, never directly define the terms, and all he puts on his slides are pictures of rats in Skinner boxes. He is functionally useless and unable to clearly get a point across. You will fail his exams.

Mark is wonderful - he's incredibly passionate about learning (he's been doing research for over 20 years now) and is well-respected in the psych world. Has a great sense of dry humor, always willing to go out of his way to help students. Grades fairly, but the class is definitely a challenge - only take it if you're willing to put in the effort.

I personally think that Mark Bouton is great. I highly recommend his learning class, but I agree that it's not a class "for the weak." It's definitely a challenge, but you'll learn a lot if you're dedicated.
