Comment:
Very interesting film class and great discussions - and the only HW each week is to watch a film. If you're in MCC and interested in film, take this. Mark didn't know most students names, and took about two months to return our midterm papers. But discussions and analysis in class made up for his bad sides.

If I could ask for my tuition back for this class, I would. He brings in great guest speakers but isn't really clear with the direction he wants to take with them. It's as if he doesn't actually want to teach, so he calls up some friends. We didn't receive a syllabus until a month into the course. Attendance is mandatory and papers are short.

Mark is a really cool person. He has honestly changed the way I think about a lot of things and his classes really make you think. Take MCM for the sake of being a better and more informed person, not just for the grade. He assigns a decent amount of reading but its not really necessary, just participate in class and he'll love you.

Comment:
Mark is a fantastic teacher whose passion for the subject is very clear. He's quite quirky, but your interest in the topic will definitely increase by the end of the class. He tends to challenge you to think and analyze texts and materials until you're mentally exhausted. Tough grader, but if you talk to him to develop your ideas, you'll be fine.

Comment:
Very harsh and not welcoming of opinions even though he asks for them. A very aggravating class that worried me for nothing. It's an enjoyable class so long as the same 3 people don't talk all the time. I loved most of the movies and am happy I had an excuse to watch them. Wouldn't recommend him bc of the stress, take it with someone else.

Fascinating class, but I wouldn't advise it for the conservatives among us. Mostly about how everything from the CIA to your local NBC station is corrupt. Brings in GREAT guest speakers who talk about getting fired for 'speaking truth to power.' Lots of reading. Don't buy the textbooks at the beginning - always changes the list or sends out PDFs.

Really hard, really biased, but REALLY brilliant. He's not exactly welcoming of different opinions, but he definitely can back up his own with evidence. I thought his class was worth it, but it's not for someone looking for an easy A with a nice kind prof.

Miller is so passionate about his views on politics to a point where he will say pretty much anything to prove his point. Has some outrageous stories and definitely interesting. But prepare to work for his class. lots of film viewing (on your own) and reading. Don't expect to sit through class and get an A easily. You really have to work.

By far the best professor I had at NYU. I'm not sure we ended up sticking to the syllabus but Mark was the most enlightening and interesting professor I encountered in my four years at NYU. History of propaganda is not as good as the ILA, but I took it as an elective (eventhough i didnt need it to graduate) just to study with him again. Awesome man!

He is one of the worst professors I've had at NYU. He is a radical who lets his politics carry him away from the subject of the course, which was propaganda. The whole course devolved into one long rant on the Bush administration, none of which was anything new.

Had MCM at Hopkins back in early 90s. Convinced me to appreciate nuances in film and media. Together w/ M. Diamond, allowed me to appreciate Godfathers I & II in ways I never thought possible.
