Comment:
Professor Ali is very kind, and passionate about his subject. However, the reading load for his class is crazy (15 readings in 1 week for a 1st year course)! There are very few assignments, and the final exam is worth 50% of your mark. However, the TAs grade easy, and the questions in the study guide appear exactly the same on the exam.

I HATED this class, despite African history being an interest of mine. The lectures were dry and read out of the textbook. Most of the learning was expected to be done on your own through the absurd amount of readings and YouTube videos assigned. The syllabus and assignments were extremely unclear and there were consistently mistakes in them.

I do not recommend taking this course. Lecture videos were filmed in very poor quality, this plus his accent made it impossible to make out what he is saying, even if you put the subtitles on. Impossible to follow along as there are no powerpoints or notes uploaded. Midterm must include 3 academic peer reviewed articles for EACH question.

My favourite professor and class this term! His teaching style ensures you watch the lectures and take notes. He and the TA for the class were extremely understanding and compassionate for student personal issues due to online school, and was just overall a really great professor!

If you end this course with anything less than a A- than you must be stupid. The prof gives exam review doc for both the midterm and the final and those exact same questions show up on the exam. Just make notes out of wikipedia and memorize the answers. No participation marks, and a 15 percent easy essay.

Mohamed Ali is a very passionate man. Honestly, it can be difficult to understand his lectures at first because he often doesn't use slides and he writes messy notes on the board. BUT overall he's very kind and after a while things start to make sense and you get used to his teaching style. Going to the tutorials really helpful!

Prof Ali may be hard to understand sometimes (do the readings ahead and sit near the front), but he is great! Classes are lecture based followed by a documentary screening. Not only is he is a generous marker but the review he gives for the midterm preps you extremely well! He is also VERY understanding when it comes to late/missed assignments.

Best History professor at Carleton, sad that 2013 is his last year of teaching at this school. Very interesting class, uses the textbook extensively (the textbook is really easy to read). I don't see how someone could fail his class, he's so fatherly!

He was hard to understand. You couldn't follow any sort of timeline. The text book will be your best friend in passing the course. He marks really easily so you don't need to go to lectures as long as you read the text book. He marks easy too.

Interesting content in the course, textbooks were main source of information. Prof gave good outline for midterm, not so much for final exam. Other small assignments were easy too.Easy Marker and friendly! Really passionate about Africa. Would take another course by him.
