Dr. Birrer is so smart. She outlines class criteria excellently, and always makes sure students understand prompts fully. Pay attention in class, do the readings, and have something to add to her discussions and you'll be fine. Her tests/papers draw directly from what is discussed in class, so make sure to attend. She's extremely kind as well.

Birrer is super smart and interesting! Make sure you read the texts and pay close attention to the specific passages gone over in class because they appear on the test! Overall, loved her class and plan on taking another with her soon.

She is so incredibly smart. I took her class as a challenge, and a challenge I got. However, it is not an unmanageable one. I wouldn't take this class if you want an easy A. I would take it if you want to learn.

More often than not I've spent around 2 hours doing reading homework for her. We read a 500 page book in one week, while also being expected to read from our other book, including annotations. Honestly, the work load is so overwhelming that I almost considered dropping my English major. She offers to help, but I doubt anyone had time to go see her.

Not sure how Dr. Birrer got such low marks. She has been my absolute favorite professor so far at CofC. She's incredibly intelligent, adorable, & just refreshing. As an English major, I don't recommend taking 202 if you're not serious about it. Heavy textbook use, weirdly laid out exams but she fully prepares you as long as you show up. Take her!!

Professor Birrer is very intelligent and the class was interesting however, reaching her expectations was impossible. She will not give you an A no matter how much effort you put into your work. Only take her class if grades do not matter to you.

I was nervous about taking Professor Birrer based off the reviews here, but she was definitely my favorite professor and class this semester. She is brilliant and enthusiastic, and every class was eye-opening. Her tests are definitely challenging, so you can't slack off. But you will learn a lot, so take her if you can!

Professor Birrer is extremely intelligent and funny. The work load is a decent amount but for the most part it's enjoyable. Exams however, are extremely difficult. More or less you have to memorize about 12 potential essays and it's worst most of your grade. If you want to challenge yourself, take this class. If not, don't put yourself through it.

An extremely challenging teacher with quite a workload. She's obviously a very intelligent professor though, and she will teach you A LOT! Prepare to work hard however, but also prepare to learn a wealth of information from taking this class :) 3 position papers, midterm, random quizzes, and final exam with an essay section

When you want a plane to crash on your house the day before the take home final is due, you know what kind of teacher Birrer is. She gives beyond a lot of work: (everything single spaced) 5 Prewritings, 5 Double sided large notecards, midterm, final, huge 13 page project. NOT EASY! do not take unless forced. she attempts to help but.. not worth it

Dr. Birrer is tough; she pushes students to improve their writing and analysis. I became a better writer in her class. The class is ALL about Postmodern Literary Criticism, which vital to understanding almost all contemporary criticism. She was helpful and available. THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A, BUT IS WORTH TAKING.

I freaking love this class. I wish I had taken this right after the 200 level courses. It is so interesting and the material really makes me think about everything else I'm reading in my other courses in a whole new way. She can be tough but the class rocks.

Dr. Birrer is the most intelligent professor in the English department. Literary Criticism has been so incredibly helpful to me in every one of my English courses and will be throughout my career, I'm sure. It's really tough and demoralizing sometimes, but seriously, take it and do the work.

This is Literary Criticism, and it is, without a doubt, the worst class ever. Do NOT take it unless you are an unfortunate English major. Dr. Birrer is brilliant, but sometimes, she is just too much to handle. She's not very accommodating when it comes to going to her for help. Steer clear of her.
