Comment:
A reading & reponse, discussion & reply and quiz every week, plus the lecture. Lectures are annoyingly posted as powerpoints with audio within the slides, often after the class date. The actual course content is simple enough, though it doesn't all tie together that well. Very slow marking.

Prof. Dean is a great prof and an amazing person. Hers is a class to take if you truly want to learn, though it can seem a bit unfocused. If you need help, Prof. Dean is one to turn to. However, like many cu history profs of late, she runs her course like a college seminar. Be ready for tons of little time swallowing tasks.

Avoid at all costs. She really is a lovely individual and really does seem to care about students, but absolutely terrible at her job. Scatterbrained, assigns an absurd workload (2 short essays a week total worth 50%) , and lectures are a waste of time as they are completely unrelated to actual coursework. A very frustrating and discouraging time.

Joanna Dean is an outstanding professor. She is knowledgeable and great at teaching the material. She provides excellent comments on your writing that will help you in the future to be a better writer. The one down is she is a bit scatterbrained (and well aware of the fact).

Honestly one of the best profs that I've had to date. She really cares about her students and will go out of her way to make sure you understand the material. Go to classes, do the assignments and you will get at least a B Gives the best and most detailed feedback on assignments - SO HELPFUL PS, super easy about giving extensions on papers!!

SHE ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT YOU AND WILL TAKE TIME OUT OF HER DAY TO LISTEN! This wonderful women may be annoying by making you want to claw your eyes out when condensing several readings into 100 word assignments, but it was extremely valuable, and same goes for the 7 mini-quizzes you write. They really help you with the final assignment and exam.

Great lady but DO NOT take a class with her. She is a terrible lecturer and grades unbelievably hard for her 100word writing assignments. She also has incredibly confusing, often indecipherable pop quizzes. My biggest critique would be that shes impossible to contact. Doesn't respond to emails, looses assignments. All in all I am not impressed.

Very passionate about the subject matter. Really great for extra help. Quizzes were not always written very clear, neither was the level of expectation for assignments. Still enjoyed the class though.

Just awful. She's an awkward and uncomfortable lecturer. No coherence, clarity, or structure to the lectures. Spends time on little details but gives no indication of the overall significance of anything she teaches. Class always runs five minutes over. She doesn't seem to like her job and this shows in how she "organizes" the course.

Great prof, and a great woman at that. If you are interested in the environment, deffintley take her! She can be a tiny bit hard on marking, and a little hard to get ahold of-but she wants you to do well! Must be ready to keep up with the work and readings, but its worth it. If you're having a hard time, talk to her, she is so sweet and smart.

Good prof if you pay attention in class - need to go to most classes if you want to pass. Very interesting lecturer - she is very passionate about her work and you can tell which areas are of interest to her. Environmental History was extremely interesting - highly recommended.

I LOVED this class... found prof. inspired & inspiring, great sense of humor & irony, very helpful when asked for advice. Tended to cram a bit much info. into limited lecture time, often rushed through last 20min. A bit of jumping around made it hard to take clear notes. Assignments were clearly outlined. You can do very well if you work at it.

Although she seems like a really nice lady, I only liked her class in the beginning but not so much towards the end. She was sort of confusing and really jumping around here and there which made the material tougher to understand :s I guess I wish she explained things better...

Prof. Dean is an amazing professor. she really cares about her students and is possibly the most helpful professor I have ever encountered. She responds to emails within 24 hours! At times her class is indeed a little dry, she often goes 2 full hours sans break, but i have learned a lot about environmental history. take this course!!

Time management is a valuable skill. The only true complaint that I have is she will make an outline of what she needs to cover, and with fifteen minutes left realize that there are like four topics left to cover and rush through them so you can't possibly understand what she is saying or take notes on it.

A quirky professor who gets so excited about canadian history that you can't help but be excited with her. Her lectures were interesting, even though I was never interested in the content. And it's great that she's not afraid of technology like so many other history profs. The first class was spent watching a movie, as have other classes since.
