Folks, He's rough. Take copious amounts of notes and don't write down the fluff. If you go to office hours he is more than helpful. I got an A in this class because I didn't regurgitate info I analyzed

Do not take his class unless you absolutely have to. He definitely knows the material and is a very smart guy but is a tough tough grader. The lectures were sooo dry and boring most people fell asleep and then he graded us on 3 essay exams which he always finds something wrong with what you're writing. Point blank the course was torture.

I love learning about the Middle Ages and I'm pretty good at history, but I hated this class. He just rambles the entire time and confuses you by jumping around. His assignments are ridiculously hard and he always finds something wrong with everything you write. This class was torture.

I got a B in this guys class and had to WORK... Im not a history major and it was a tuff class, in all honesty tho I learned a ton, and I retained it. He is an extremely hard grader and there is a lot of information to retain, if you really want to learn about the civilization of the Middle Ages tho this is the guy to learn it from.

I had him for Western Civ 1. Definitely do not take him unless you have to or unless you're and A++ history buff to begin with. His lectures were so dry and boring, and the way he presented the information was so confusing. He only gave us papers as tests, which doesnt sound too bad, however I am an A student and got one D and 2 C's .

Do not take him unless you have to. Extremely tough grader. You will get D's and C's on your first two papers and need to pull off a great final paper to get a chance at a B. He doesn't tell you how he wants the papers done. He talks all class long for the whole class period. You're on your own with the papers.

Extremely tough to earn a c or better in this class. All exams are take home but you will have to work your tail off to score a C or better. Very boreing but thorough lectures and you will have to read 3 boreing books throughout the semester. If you are looking for an easy grade, than this class is not for you. The professor is a nice guy though an

If you are a serious history student, then take Prof Russell in a heartbeat. He's extremely intelligent and you'll gain more knowledge in this one class than practically any other class you'll take. He grades hard, but it only makes you write better on the next paper, and if you show improvement it will be rewarded.

(Civ of the Middle Ages)Be prepared to read many books through out the semester. The sooner you start the better. If you are interested in this subject you will be enthused to research it, if not, do not enroll into the course. Russell is unfortunately unclear which is most probably due to his vast knowledge. Great course, ended up with a B+.

drop this class QUICK if you have him. Not really willing to help you after class, worst grader I've ever met, and an overall hell-ish experience. he sits on the table and just talks in a boring monotone voice. writes no notes and gives you nothing to work with other then the syllabus. waste of time/tuition money to take him.

He is a genious, but not the best teacher. For someone like me who came into the class interested the subj but with no prior knowledge of history, this class was hell! It was boring beyond belief &i got a D on a paper that i felt really confident about. If you think you can handle it, you'll learn a lot. If not,RUN! it will def bring down your GPA

The Great Russell reminds me of my old Jesuit College days when profesors were tough on students, but you learned a whole from them and appreciated all the work afterwards. No doubt...he will test you during the semester and you need lots of patience and time to go over all the materials which he will ask you too read....

RUN! And run as fast as you can away from this class! His ratings are no lie. He expects too much and he grades harshly (half the class received a D on the first paper!). You're GPA will definitely take a nose dive. He is do-able, but do you really want to put yourself through that much torture?
