Horrible and oftentimes flustered lecturer (but definitely means well); thank god my GSI made everything make sense. A lot of people fail this class simply because they don't pay enough attention though. Definitely put in the proper time and effort.

He's definitely not a very good lecturer, as all the comments here would have you indicate. However, at least for MATH 53, he did a superb job structuring the class and making sure the class was fair. Other Calc III profs really botch up the order and leave way too little time for certain topics, but he does an extremely even split among topics.

Don't go to lecture. Unless you're fascinated by a rather slow walk-through of proofs provided in the textbook, going to lecture will neither teach you problem solving techniques, nor deepen your understanding of the course. Read the book, attend discussion, and the class is (mostly) a breeze. Steel's tests are tricky though, so watch out.

As a gullible freshman, I went to every single lecture even though less than 10% of the class remained by the end. Rely on a good GSI, reading the book, and khan academy videos to really comprehend the material. Do all the homework and suggested problems and really understand how to do them, not just slader the answers.

Going to his lectures helps you appreciate the mathematics for its own visceral beauty, but at the same time, it does not help you as doing the problems on your own. However, I guarantee you: with Steel, you will learn, and you will get the grade you deserve. He is especially helpful during his office hours, and my GSI was also very knowledgeable.

John Steel is a overall good lecturer even though he could sometimes be nervous in lectures. However, as long as you read the textbook and go to the lectures you will be fine. His exams are extremely straightforward, I got a 99% on the final without much studying. My suggestion is that go to the lectures, and that will prove worthy.

His lectures are useless and make things more confusing, but the material can be learned pretty well just reading the book. His test questions aren't very hard so I'd actually recommend him because you can skip 3 hours of class every week and still get a decent grade.

Mumbles alot, makes careless errors often. General social awkwardness. He knows his math inside and out, but sometimes I think he knows it so well he has forgotten what it is like to still be learning the material.

All of the below comments are true, dude's lectures are a joke. My GSI helped me understand something, then I went to lecture and he complicated it so much that I unlearned it. This same GSI also told me explicitly, do not go to lecture, it will make you stupider. If you can teach yourself this stuff, go for it. Otherwise, good luck.

Class is extremely manageable by not going to lecture. His lectures are not interesting and he just says "uhm" all the time. Just learn from the book. However, his midterms were extremely easy and making little mistakes cost you the grade.

Lectures are useless. Use the book to teach yourself everything. Tests are incredibly easy and the curve is usually just as generous. I highly recommend Steel if you're good at independently teaching yourself math.

Do not take his class. He is a useless lecturer and spends at least 1/3 of class time staring at the board going "uh...." Even if you read and did the homework ahead of time you still manage to get lost when he teaches.

Comment:
Lecture was useless at the beginning, slightly better towards the end. First midterm was absurd, second was insultingly easy, final had a lot of material from the first part of the class. I don't recommend Steel.
