Very little direction. He has not prepared the semester beforehand, so he stumbles through complicated programs and relies on students for help. Syllabus is 68 page Google Doc. Not on Canvas, which is inconvenient. Spent hours on meditation and creative writing, no composing. Plans his classes poorly, spends class talking about himself. Narcissist.

Great teacher. Extremely understanding about work in other classes and outside problems. A great guy to talk to if you ever have problems.

Dr. Waters is a unique person. Personally, I think some of his compositions are beautiful. However, he is not a typical comp teacher. In class, we read books about meditation and creative writing. As a freshman, I got zero lessons and only had one composition assignment per semester. I never felt like he cared about me or the music I was writing

This class is an absolute joke. The only thing I have learned from him is how to eat a raisin for 45 minutes. He talks about how open minded he is, but only if it is in line with his beliefs. We waste time reading one sentence out of a book that doesn't use basic sentence structure. I can't believe I have to take this class twice.

Comp lab with J. Waters has been one of the worst experiences of my life. Despite the name, composition is the last thing you will do in this class. His position at SDSU is merely a platform for him to promote his own music, and he will threaten your graduation if you don't attend one of his pop up workshops (not mentioned in the syllabus) avoid

This was my first time taking lessons with him, and he's been giving tremendous feedback to help me improve as a composer, and you can really tell how much he cares about his students. The only issue is that he will spend the whole hour focusing on the first 4 measures of the piece as he's very detail-oriented, so be careful of that.

I was a little disappointed in this semester of 207 compared to the last one. I don't feel like a vegetable orchestra or reading Temple Grandin helped me become a better composer. But Dr. Waters is an absolute genius and simply listening to him talk will make you smarter. I really look forward to taking lessons with him next year.

Dr. Waters (or Jozefius as he calls himself) is one of the most brilliant people I've ever met & everything he says is so inspirational and deep. Very motivational, positive, and helpful. Only problem is although the class is "composition lab", you don't actually learn how to compose music. Guaranteed A as long as you show up to class & show effort

Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. I learned a lot about electronic music that I never knew before or explored. He even taught me a little about myself. His lectures are very engaged so if you are shy then this will be a big change of speed. Don't miss a class session or it means points off your grade.

Joe has a great outlook on life and art and his brain is certainly worth picking. Unfortunately I get the feeling that not enough students do pick his brain and he's all about letting people be in charge of their own education. I fear that people are missing a lot by not being proactive enough and looking for the easiest route.

Totally agree with comment below. JW regards the school as a great stage where he can perform himself and his mediocre music. Don't be fooled though, he's not the nice guy he tries to appear. He is a pathetic, resentful, vindictive clown. Department deserves him though, this is our "21st century music education"Best we can do is leave soon

As with other classes he teaches, & i've been required to take, he barely seems 2 know the actual technology we MUST use. Full-of himself too ridiculous: not avail 2 students - does his thing, gets away w/ it. wow, music dean, R U kidding? access 2 recrd studio = best feature. rip-off!Kiss his a$$= A. Mus Dpt looks better on paper than n real life.

****ing awesome!!! If every instructor was like this I would not only learn a lot but I would have soooo much fun!!! Topic is a bit "meaty", but you have so much fun that it doesn't matter. Very Hands on so you get to USE WHAT YOU LEARN. What else can I say! I will be taking his next class spring semester that is for sure.

be prepared to sit through heavy theory of frequency because you need to know how to push bottons and political jabber of electonic sounds, if you can put up with it, he will expect you to know terms for a written midterm, the final is your showcase of talent debut.
