Comment:
This class was extremely disappointing. The professor is soooo dull. I was really interested in this field before I took this class. I basically learned the vocab from the book, skipped class, and still passed with an A. It's a great class if you need fluff. If you wanted to actually learn and become impassioned look someplace else.

I needed a double shot to stay awake in his class ( it was at 9am), BUT it was so enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable, and I decided to major in Anthropology and minor in linguistics because of him.

Gorbet is very knowledgable, but doesn't use any technology in his lectures. His lectures are dull, says "um" repeatedly and teaches straight from the textbook. Read the lecture notes he posts online and skim the chapter... you'll do fine!

He's very intelligent and very much loves linguistics. The lectures can be very interesting and then other days, quite boring. He's very nice and responds to emails promptly. The tests weren't too difficult. I never used the book.

I had him for Cultures of the World, easy enough class. The lectures were a bit dry /: but the midterm and final were predictable if you go to class. It's actually not bad and I recommend him! He makes it so everyone can pass, he's a bit timid but he's very enthusiastic about this stuff... good guy, good class (:

I took ling 101 with him and if you don't want to turn in papers, take him! Of course his lectures got very boring and you might zone out now and again. He is very knowledgeable and is VERY easy going. If you like no work, can pay attention, write notes. This is the professor for you!

Larry Gorbet is very enthusiastic but his lecture style teaching is not always the easiest to follow. There is almost no homework and just a midterm and a final. He designs his grading style to help everyone pass. An easy class but boring if you're not into it.

Nice enough guy, but very dry and the few times I tried to talk to him he seemed a little timid. Class is easy enough and material isn't bad. Just study the handouts and you'll be fine.

Professor Gorbet knows his stuff, and he is a great guy, but his lectures can get a bit tedious. He offers some great stories about personal experiences with languages that supplement the sometimes dry lecture material.

Lectures are SO boring. When I did go to class, I never listened. I went to like 2 discussions out of the 6. Print out the lecture notes, study them for the midterm & final, and you'll be fine.

Dr Gorbet knows subject very well. I never payed attention because lectures were so boring....but the subject is boring. All important information is on handouts that you can print out b4 final. Be sure to go to class on "discussion" days. He doesnt warn you about these days at all...it counts toward participation. Easy class!

Comment:
Dr. Gorbet is obviously very intelligent and knowledgeable about his area of study, however, I found his lectures a bit on the pointless side and very hard to follow. His tests are not entirely relevant to lecture or the book, either. He is understanding and accomidating, though, and akwardly answers any questions you might have.

Dr. Gorbet has a profound interest and knowledge of his subject. I found his lectures to be fascinating. The book didn't supplement the lectures too closely, but the important material came from handouts and lecture. This class made so many connections between all the languages I have studied it was amazing. Did I mention I'm a chemistry major?

People with no appreciation for an educated and inquisitive teacher will not appreciate his class. He knows so much it is facinating to hear him talk. Yes, his lectures are boring, but his enthusiasm for teaching far makes up for it. The class is extremely easy as long as you attend class. I though he was a very sweet man too.

Overall an easy class, he can be very tedious, especially early in the morning, but is a nice enough guy. Tests come directly from his handouts, don't bother buying the book.

Boring, easy is the only way to describe the class. I would entitle this my sleeping class, the test are usually curved...an easy class if your awake during the tests.

For a man who knows so many languages, he sure doesn't have much command of English. The lectures are so boring, I find myself counting how many times he uses "fillers" (Um, uh, ya know) or stutters. Having the textbook seems irrelevant. He is very prone to tangents.

Comment:
The lectures are really funny and the tests are easy if you go to class every day and take good notes. Don't be put off by the first few lectures; they get more cohesive and interesting as he gets to know the class.
