If you are not majoring in English, I do not recommend taking this class. He is a very tough grader. Also, his feedback on work is always the same and does not explain why you got the grade you received. Heads up, you will have TONS of reading to do.

The most amazing and respected professor I have had the privilege of taking during my time at SVSU. He expects you to do the work (no more than a normal class askes of you) and do your best, but I have learned the most and enjoyed his classes every time. You will not be sorry.

Worst English class Ive ever taken. Gardner is great personality wise, although hes a VERY tough grader. He had very unclear and harsh grading expectations. There were only a few high stake assignments. Participation also matters. Do not take this class if you want to keep your GPA.

I have never received an awful grade in English until I had this teacher. We have very few high stake assignments, but when we do he grades very intensely. He seems to favor certain students, and he bases our grades off of them. He expects all of his students to be similar to the best student in the class.

Steer clear from him if you are not an English major. Came into his class confident in my writing abilities. He grades like hitler, no seriously he does. Not clear with what he wants from you. Just steer clear from him if you care about your GPA. Not worth all the stress from an English class. Even now on online classes hes still so particular.

Very friendly and caring professor. Feedback is a bit confusing sometimes though. Had a couple short writing assignments and a large research project at the end of the semester. Really passionate about English!

Literally the worst professor I ever had. Quizzes were very hard, and you can't really study for them. Tried my best, and still failed. Will NEVER take again. Very specific o quizzes and the final paper.

A great choice for a professor. He is down to earth, respectful, helpful, and encouraging. He is a tough grader, and sometimes his directions aren't clear. Going to office hours help. He will give a lot of feedback and make you work for a grade. Overall, a great guy. I really learned a lot in this class. Show up, do the work, you'll be fine.

If you do not like to talk in class, Dr. Gardner is not the professor for you. You are graded on participation heavily in any of his courses (I've had him 3 times) and it is crucial to your final grade. We wrote two papers, took three quizzes, and had one final exam. Dr. Gardner is enjoyable in class and quite funny, but he is a hard grader.

His grading was very unclear and he bashed every paper. He still graded tough even if you went to see him during his office hours to ask him for help on the papers. His tests were all written so it is based on his opinion what you receive as a score. I recommend staying clear from him if you want a good grade.

The worst professor I've ever had. His expectations of you are totally unclear. The semester consisted of 2 papers (which he ripped me apart both times, and gave vague feedback why), 2 exams which are extremely hard and participation. I didn't miss a class and still got a C average for participation because I didn't talk enough in class apparently.

This is my second time taking Dr. Gardner and I really want to like his classes, but unfortunately, I do not. You are graded on two papers, class participation, a brief exam, and a final project proposal. While I did not enjoy the class all semester, the proposal made it worse. It is worth 300 points and you only have two weeks to do it. Good luck.

Dr. Gardner is very funny and respected. His teaching style does not alter throughout the semester and you are graded based on three exams, two major papers, and class participation. Expect to write a lot for the papers and exams. He is also a tough grader, but going to office hours does help. Also be aware that the class can be boring sometimes.

I have taken Dr. Gardner for 3 classes, and if I could, I would take him for everyone. As an English major, I highly respect him. He is by far the most knowledgeable professor in the English department. Once you can respect his knowledge, his classes are extremely enjoyable. He is by far the most humble professor I have ever had.

I've had Dr. Gardner for multiple classes. I definitely think that he's one of the smartest professors in the English department. It's true that he is a tough grader (basically never expect anything above a B), but not impossible to do well. "A true gem" is right. He knows his material, is passionate about it, and cares about his students

Students should only take Professor Garner's class if they are taking a light course load in other classes or have the time that it takes to be as thorough as he wants you to be. He is a tough grader but he gives great feedback on how you can improve and this feedback can definitely be applied in other classes, especially English.

Professor Gardner is a very nice man, and I have nothing against him. He is pretty upfront, and willing to help. However, his grading was impossible for me. I took two classes from him, and I had to drop both of them. I never drop classes. I'm normally very successful in others. When I think I did well, I get a failing grade.
