This class was super heavy on the reading, but Joyce teaches you how to structure read and skim the important parts. I found it easy to get lost, so make sure you go to discussion and as many lectures as you can take! It's definitely heavy material. My GSI's helped. The midterm was difficult due to the time crunch but they graded fairly.

A L&S counselor suggested I sign up for this course. I was so overwhelmed by the structure and subject of the class. Two-class lectures with her and a discussion group with one of her GSIs. Prof. Joyce lectured as if she was performing in a comedy club, and her lectures were hilarious. It was a struggle yet I was surprised I did well in her class.

Really easy and simple class. If you need an easy A and don't want to think critically about race and gender this is your class.

Her class is really easy. She thinks she's really radical but actually hella basic. Just do the work and you'll get an A. Kind of a joke class.

Definitely a very intelligent woman, but maybe too intelligent? It was really hard to understand what she was getting at, because her style of teaching was perplexing. She speaks really fast so it's hard to keep up. Just keep up with the readings to do well. You don't have to read the books just the articles! Don't buy the books!

I agree with the many commenters who say Joyce is fun & brilliant. But her instruction was awful. Her much-vaunted scientific "pedagogical technique" was useless, judging by my peers. >1/2 of class was student-taught (ie, a waste of time). She showed arrogance & disregard for students. She blew off class at the end of the sem. & skipped OH. Awful.

Comment:
Rosemary Joyce is wonderful. I hated the structure of this class, because I think it makes it way too easy for students to do almost nothing and pass. OTOH, if you do pay any attention, you can learn a hell of a lot in the class, and Dr. Joyce is one of the nicest, most helpful professors in existence.

Rosemary is brilliant! This class was NOT set up very well and was really stressful, but the final project came together in the end. And Rosemary is so approachable and friendly that I felt comfortable making suggestions to her directly. I learned a lot about museums and how they work... if that is your interest, I definitely recommend this class!

Joyce is the chair of the anthropology department for a reason-she is a brilliant professor.Lectures can sometimes be a little over the heads of her students, but her number one goal is that her students learn and are engaged.Provides excellent reading, articles mostly.Class is set up like grad seminar, so how much you learn is up to you. "easy" a.

Rosemary is absolutely BRILLIANT. Her lectures and req. readings are always interesting. The class is structured like a graduate seminar which may or may not appeal to undergrad students. It's challenging if you want the challenge, otherwise it just seems like an easy A class (complete the assignments, go to section, get an A...learn nothing).

I have to say, its embarrassing taking part in her class. Joyce treats the class like we're in elementary school and accomplishes nothing in her lectures. The students are left to learn everything through reading assignments, and the structure of the class/grading is useless. I have never been so bored, unchallenged and frusturated in class.

Her classes seem hard, but they are actually very easy. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is unneccesary to get a good grade. I only did have of it but got an A+, also the final was optional.

Good prof! Fair with grading, currently taking 114 as a major requirement and I've only lost 5 points so far. VERY clear during lecture, just get a good GSI.
