Professor Garvey is a great professor. I took this course, which was book & essay heavy -I am not an English major. She is extremely knowledgeable and is open to hearing everyone's opinions on the literature, assignments, etc. I personally did well, but I know some peers struggled. My advice is to actually read the books & participate!!

Dr. Garvey and this course epitomize all that is wrong with the upper education system. She ran a class for non-English majors as if it were indeed for English majors. Too much for a core class. She did not teach us how to properly write an essay, only providing vague feedback. Most got a C or lower on the midterm essay. Nice person, awful class.

Dr. Garvey is incredibly smart and gives great lectures, however she is a tough grader. You always have the chance to rewrite essays or make up assignments, but she will make you work for the grade. Wouldn't recommend for core classes but highly recommend to English majors or minors.

This is one of the worst professors I have ever had. The course is BLM and she doesn't teach whatsoever. All she does is bring speakers in every class and has you answer their questionnaire. Does not deserve the paycheck for the job she is doing. She is a scatterbrain who moves assignments around all the time. Doesn't go off the syllabus.

For a required core class, there's way too much work, sometimes 300-350 pages a week. She grades essays extremely harshly and gives snarky comments to the class about the quality of an assignment she didn't explain well. 55% of the overall grade is based on these papers, papers she made half the class re-write. Doesn't that say something about her?

Professor Garvey is an amazing human and is very kind. She is a very hard grader because she expects a high quality paper. She assigns a lot of readings that can be exhausting. I took her for a 100 level lit class and I was surprised with the high expectations that she has for papers. I recommend running drafts by her early on to get detailed feed

A very tough teacher throughout the semester but I ended up with a better grade than expected. Its usually 50-80 pages of a novel due at every class, and each class is basically a discussion about the content and themes of the novel. Def only take if you like reading/are an English major. Fair grader but expects a lot of effort

Dr. Garvey is very kind and wants each student to succeed. She is very clear with her grading and if you see her outside the classroom for papers, she is the most helpful there. However, there is A TON of reading required which tbh just took too much time to actually read and many students ended up just skimming it.

Prof. Garvey is a great professor but her course requires a lot of nightly reading (sometimes too much) and she is a very tough grader on papers. She is always willing to help you better understand the material and help you better your writing. The books required for the course are interesting so lectures aren't bad.

So much reading-- if you don't like to read a lot don't take this professor. Not too bad of a grader, but if you want an A you will definitely have to work for it.

The reading would have been okay if this was a higher-lever or major course, but it was the freshman core english requirement. Her grading was so unnecessarily tough on papers, I always had to rewrite them. I took AP English in high school, had a very tough teacher & am a strong writer, she gave me low B's on every paper. I wouldn't recommend.

Prof Garvey is extremely sweet and cares about your opinion. Class time is completely what you make of it, and revolves around the topics you raise your hand to talk about. Great class, helped my writing a lot. Didn't even read all of the books but got an A. Please don't be afraid to participate.

She is amazing. There is a lot of readings, but its interesting. If you are into African American literature she is the one to take. She is not an easy grader, but really helps you out through the essay process. I will take her again

She is very nice, and she offers a lot of help during office hours. She grades pretty hard, but she lets you revise. There is a lot of reading (sometimes a 400 p. bk in a week), but the books are interesting.

Awesome teacher, willing to help a lot. Abuse her office hours. She used a variety of 'thin books' so readings were always cake. She isvery structured and detail is key. Participation is a must including attendance ( i had an 8 am) but its worth the A
