Interesting class, gives you some perspective; short readings and videos, a lot of short in-class assignments. He has a high grading standard on exams. Unfortunately, the grade you have in the class at any time is not clear. But if you email him he is helpful and courteous. He REALLY rewards in-class participation. It is a third of your grade.

Comment:
Prof. Mellican is a good guy and the assignments that he has us read for engineering is interesting. However, the issue is that the class he teaches, Engineering and Ethics feels tougher than physics of matter and mechanical behavior. In terms of grade, I regret taking his class.

Comment:
Prof. Mellican has a wealth of knowledge in engineering topics. He speaks with a drawl and thinks a lot of what he is going to say which can make the class boring. Class consists of reading handouts and taking notes on videos. Make sure to have a good memory of the concepts and just agree with everything he says. You will be fine.

Very nice old man but his grading scheme is all over the place. All you do is watch VHS tapes he's recorded of 60 minutes, Nightline, etc... from years ago and has you take notes on it. Very unclear as to what is expected or how you're being graded. Was out the last week before finals and didn't give us any idea of what the final would cover.

Not impressed with his teaching style. Most of the class had no idea what we were even being tested on for the final exam, more of a reading comprehension/note taking class than ethics. All you is answer questions on reading and take notes on videos, very useless, but he seems nice overall, but with his grading system I had no idea how I was doing.

You watch a lot of videos, read a lot of articles and write something in every class to hand in. The reading quizzes can be a little ridiculous in that he wants you to interpret the article the way he sees it. The good thing is the class requires little time outside of classes and your grade is heavily based on attendance (to him this is most imp.)

About as useful as a class as sitting in quicksand. He does not want to have open debates even if it's in an ethics class. You have to write things on the test in a way he likes it. Very poor wording on the tests. Highly recommend you avoid him.

Prof. Mellican is the man! His Engineering and Ethics class was extremely interesting and he had a great sense of humor. However, his grading scheme was very confusing. I would definitely recommend taking the class.

This is HONESTLY the most worthless class I've ever taken. Basically, the idea in this class is to write down what he wants you to say and any disagreement will lead to a bad grade. Professor Mellican has NEVER worked as an engineer. He believes he fully understands engineering by studying the careers of other engineers. Useless..

Funny guy. If you're late to class, he'll label you as 'Inefficient!!, inefficient!!' Learned alot from this teacher... like when you should retire! But good class, interesting teaching style.

Funny teacher. Likes open discussions. Sometimes uses them as a sound board, and will shoot your ass down if you don't know what you're talking about. Doesn't really give a crud about grades, but that's not the point anyway.

My issue is that he constantly injects his very liberal politics into every class multiple times. If you dissagree with him you are labled ignorant, and therefore should be quiet. I find an ethical problem with that.

Good and bad. Thinks ethics means memorizing lists for a test. Great to see him address private conversations in class. Very knowledgeable about the history of engineering failures.

Great teacher, nice movies, easy tests as long as you read the handouts. Stumbles over his words and losses his mind if a cell rings in class(one of the many perks)
