Comment:
Horrible professor; I feel like I didn't learn anything about fluid mechanics, as he only taught what he FELT was important about the topics. Exams were absolutely ridiculous; for the first time I can say that a professor at Pitt was truly unfair in grading. Just a horrible experience; thank goodness he's retiring soon.

Teaches material based on application, and rarely goes over the actual concepts. Grades not only your work but how you present it, e.g. sketch of the system, nomenclature. Even when going over the applications, breezes through the lecture slides and expects you to understand the concepts behind the raw math. Having taken bioe 1210 should help

Comment:
Dr. Patzer is incredibly rude and does not respect his students. He will talk down to you as though you are in kindergarten. He is awful at teaching and his slides are a mess. He has unrealistic expectations for homework and test format and uses it as an excuse to dock a lot of points.

A. Homework after almost every class; some is very hard but some is done with a group B. A few extra credit assignments help boost your grade C. He gives projected grades after every testproject... very helpful D. The group project is graded fairly harshly, but no worries E. Tests are hard, but questions given ahead of time.. work together

You need to put in the work to get a grade. Go to class and do all the homeworks. Get a good group to work on the tests that he gives a week before you take them. He is unbelievably particular on formatting, it is like half the points. He makes you seem like you're going to do bad but things end up ok so just stick through it

expects a lot from students. homeworks due twice a week. gives exam questions ahead of time. not always clear on quiz/exam questions. SEE him during office hours for any clarifications. barely used textbook. good professor. if you put the work in you'll do well. get to know your fellow BioE b/c this class requires peer collaboration/help.

He expects you to work like transport is the only class you are taking. Homework is assigned bi-weekly and tests can be difficult; he gives you the questions ahead of time, but grades like he has a vendetta against the class. An A is attainable, but requires a lot of work. He is a brilliant lecturer, however, and does care about students learnig

I didn't like thermo but transport is much better. Can be snarky and patronizing. Knowledgable, cares, puts in lots of effort, and expects the same from you. Often grades unreasonably hard, sometimes takes off points w/o giving a reason! Patzered (adj.) - when you study hard, think you did well on a test, get it back, and turns out you failed it

Not really that great. Makes a bad habit of talking to his classes as though it was 1st grade. He believes that he is a very important and so smart. He operates his courses under the idea that you have nothing to do but work for his class. Grading is very unfair. He is highly demanding and expects more than is reasonable.

Patzer is awesome. His notes are clear and helpful and he sticks to them in lecture. He uses great examples to demonstrate concepts. The homework is difficult, but definitely not impossible; and the TA's are helpful. The tests are great--he gives them to you before you sit them. I would recommend taking any of his classes.

Dr. Patzer thinks he's clever. If you affirm this, he will like you. Ask questions, but not the ones that you know that he cannot answer. The homework is key. If you go to his office hours, he will help you with it. Everything is analogous.

For biothermo his tests were ridiculously hard and weren't always graded that fairly, but don't let his "there is no curve" speal scare you because he gives extra credit and puts more weight on homework and quizes. Also I wouldn't worry too much about any "projects" he mentions, because he might not even have you do them in the end... Not a bad guy

At first I thought he was going to be horrible, but in the end he turned out to be a pretty good professor. His tests were typically impossible, but homework, quizes and other assignments were given considerable weight to make it possible to get a decent grade.

This guy is growing on me. I had him last semester for BioTransport and I have him again now. He seems a little cold and harsh at first, but in reality he really wants to make you learn. He'll give you help if you ask for it.
