Comment:
I took Whitlark for both Bible as Lit and Lit of the Fantastic. You do the same amount of work in both classes, 2 essays and 2 test (tests are essays as well). The levels of unconsciousness can be a bit daunting at first, but it's easy to understand once you get the hang of it. As long as you give your papers some effort you will do well.

I took intro to fiction, very easy class never read or took notes but you have to go to class to pass the tests and listen carefully because he's very sporadic in his lectures.

Super boring!!!! You HAVE to go to class bcuz his tests are over what he says. Very hard to stay awake in there, but the more notes the better. It's an easy class because he says all his answers through lecture.

So boring. So easy. This entire class is writing essays (4 total), but as long as you try and give the minimal effort, you'll get an A. He gives you all the answers in the lectures; the notes literally write the essays. Material really isn't related to fiction. If you can get over how boring class is and make yourself go, you'll get an A.

Even though he does dress strange and he wore the same outfit everyday for a week. The man is absolutely brilliant. He's interesting to talk to and he know basically everything. He is an awesome teacher.

I agree he is absolutely brilliant, but unfortunately I had trouble actually understanding him. Not because of the subject matter, but because he mumbled! It was a really easy class and he was interesting when I could hear him. Don't take him in huge lecture hall.

Absolutely brilliant. He's read everything. EVERYTHING, and in a dozen languages. Really interesting and funny, but you have to pay attention because he links ideas from one lecture to ideas in a dozen other lectures. Very understanding as long as he knows you're trying....

Interesting teacher. Has a quirky sense of humor. In his class we didn't have a single paper due, just 6 books to read and tests over the books. Incredibly easy! If you go to every class he explains the book for you so you never have to read the books! I only read 2 of the books and I'm making a cool B ^_^

I told Masterpieces of Lit, Science Fiction/Fantasy, AND Bible as Lit from this professor. YES, I liked him THAT much! Agree with prior poster that he was a free spirit, and will also go line by line (in Masterpieces of Lit) to make sure you understand text, story, and big picture. Loved this professor... graduated in 97!

Religion&Lit. I am a serious lit student. I like to critically analyze texts. I have a brain. None of these things mattered in his class. Horrifically easy class if you accept what he says about (****) levels of awareness. Lectures AT you and ALLOWS you to ask him questions. Won some points by his utter enthusiasm and free spirit.

Extremely sharp and entertaining. Some students were having a hard time with the shifting perspective he used in class, so he brought out hand-puppets to clarify whether he was speaking from the believer's(lion), literary analyst's(unicorn), or atheist's(dragon) point of view - in character. The content and the mind-opening factor were outstanding.

While entertaining, his tests have virtually nothing to do with the book or his lectures. I think he uses the same test every year and just forgets to go over some parts in his lectures. However, his class is almost the only non-writing intensive Intro to Fiction class.

He has the most entertaining lectures I have ever seen. You just have to be sure to pay attention to what he is saying along with his actions....his tests are rather specific.

Dr. Whitlark is one of the best professors in the English Dept. I would highly recommend him to any serious lit student, especially if interested in examining religion and lit.
