Had her for phonetics and was pretty confused the whole time. The class was a mixture of grad and undergrad students, mainly linguistic majors. We had NO GRADES AT ALL until the final, but basically everyone got an A. Was super unavailable for questions outside of class and office hours and often faulted students for not understanding things.

Did not explain anything, expected a level of understanding that half the students didn't have, its an intro class yet we were expected to be familiar with high level concepts, almost no teaching was done it was all through example which were never explained! students would just write on the board and she would never tell us why it was right/wrong

Phenomenal teacher. Only two tests are final and midterm. Never opened either of the textbooks. Showing up and taking good notes are an absolute must, but her lectures are very clear and very interesting. She's extremely smart and it shows, and she is a blast to learn from.

Not the most interesting teacher and doesn't teach information that helps in life, so it kind of feels like a pointless class other than fulfilling a requirement. She sporadically takes attendance but if you email her, she's nice about skipping class for legitimate reasons. There's no homework and two exams that are easy, but the paper is annoying.

Ms. Orie is the cutest thing! I genuinely looked forward to all of her classes. There are no tests aside from the midterm and the final, both of which were essay based and she told you what subjects the essays would be on so you could come prepared. There was also one project presentation and one term paper, both were pretty easy and graded fairly.

This class was pretty hard for me, but she's a good professor. Lots of information so I wouldn't recommend skipping class. Have never used the textbook. Takes attendance sporadically. Sometimes sends out readings to do. Very helpful and open to answering questions. Super approachable and knowledgeable.

She is so charismatic and really loves her field. The midterm is a timed essay and at the end of the semester you have to present a project and write a paper then the final exam is another essay. Highly recommend her!

One of my favorite professors. She's funny and engaging. In fact, classes often felt like group study as she was as interested in giving students' ideas the floor as she was in lecturing. This open approach also led to not going over much of the material in class. Expect to be treated as an adult that should be studying hard outside of class.

Professor Orie is the sweetest woman in the world. She expects you to study for her two essay tests that she grades very fairly, so just do it. Went into this class not knowing what it would be about, and actually really enjoyed it. Take her if you can, she's really interesting and caring.

Orie is a sweet woman who cares a lot about her students. She is an easy grader when it comes to the first test, which is simply regurgitating information. That being said, lectures are pretty disorganized in the second half of the semester and she is not awesome at explaining concepts when students are confused, making it hard to pay attention

Professor Orie treats her students like her own children. She is the nicest, sweetest, most genuine person I've ever met in my life. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll get an A. She is passionate about linguistics, hilarious, and incredibly helpful. She gave my mom a gift from Nigeria once. She changed my life.

Super easy class if you go to class and pay attention. Not sure how different it is in summer, but we had a weekly essay quiz and a final paper that's around 10 pages on a language of your choice. Orie is incredibly sweet too. She loves what she's teaching and it makes for a good class!

Languages of the World is an easy class to fulfill that outside the European tradition. She is a really great professor, more concerned that her students like the material than most, and gives you straight up all the information you need. The book isn't necessary, or even helpful, and her tests are nothing much to worry about. Recommended to all

Prof Orie is so fun! A lot of people have said she is tough and disorganized but honestly go to class, take notes, and go over them later and you will get an A. She gives you all the info you need, no need to ever open a book. Her tests seem hard but she is an EASY GRADER, so everyone relax. Get on her good side and she'll be super nice to you!

As a person, she's friendly, interesting and funny. But as a professor, I find her very scattered and way too technical for an intro class. Take if you like linguistics, but look for something else if you're just trying to fill a requirement. GO TO EVERY CLASS, and be sure to use specific examples from her lectures on tests.

Orie is great. She's pretty helpful, light-hearted, and just loves linguistics. Work is minimal, though you'll need to do it in order to keep up, but she never asks too much of you, and never surprises you on tests. Just go to every class and you're fine.

She may know a good amount about languages, but she's one of the least organized professors I have ever had. Extremely technical for a 100-level class, and you'll find yourself having to rewrite notes frequently because of her scattered style. The course is less fun than I imagined it would be.
