Wildly intelligent. A ton of homework, but as long as you're over prepared, you'll do fine

Dr. Lehrman was funny! His demeanor always cracked me up, and I loved his Russian accent. His classes are kind of hard to follow, but he's a really interesting man. Believe me you'll learn ramdoms stuff in his class...like pigs can't look up! Who knew???

The only reason I took it was because it was required. He is very intelligent, but doesnt map out what the class discussion will be everyday, therefore, he is sometimes just listening to himself talk. Caught him on multiple occasions accidentally contradicting himself. Make sure you get definitions and concepts down by midterm/final.

Alexander Lehrman, ah yes. Great man, no doubt about it. Very intelligent, and always willing to help. The thing is, you had to go to him for help. The class itself was different, hard, but it made you think about things more so than you were used to. He can be very serious, but have a good joke at the same time. Good fys, but its 3 days a wee

The class was okay...the best days were when we got off topic. Like his days as "Sasha the rockstar." He is an amazing teacher though. The class was pretty fun it was just the topic that was boring. If you have a chance, take one of Lehrman's classes. He is one most interesting people you will ever meet. He can speak 30+ languages.

I hated this class, but it wasn't lehrman's fault. If you have to take it for your FYS just grin and bare it. The class description itself is very vague. Lehrman is the cutest old man ever, though, and clearly brilliant. The one thing i would say i got from this class was that I got to meet a real live rockstar/genius. He is a rock star. Ask him.

this is a really boring class. i had to take it as a fys and it sucks. lehrman is absolutely brilliant, he speaks 20+ languages but the class is really hard. its all about interpretation and theory and it will give you a headache. if you are a spanish major, take fllt 326. everyone else, get out of this class if at all possible. i'm warning you.

Excellent man, very very smart, funny, encouraging, and helpful. I am currently in his Russian class and took a FLLT class before with him. The FLLT class was boring just because of the topic, but he is very helpful and passionate about his work. Definitely take a class of his if you can.

Very knowledgeable guy, seems as if he's studied hundreds of languages in his short time on earth. If you're looking for a cultural req., go elsewhere, as the concepts that he teaches are pretty advanced and require a good deal of thought. If you love Linguistics however, this class is a must-take, though his style may not appeal to some. B-

Classes usually involved discussing random sections of the readings, which were typically not helpful nor easy to read whatsoever. Class was not structured- hardly a syllabus and no information about what would be on the final exam, other than "information covered since the midterm." very intelligent/nice/funny/passionate man, very boring class.

i'm a three language major and this class was the most boring class ever. we sat in a hot classroom in smith and talked about languages no one cares about. the textbook we used was just a bunch of words thrown up on pieces of paper. he no longer allows test corrections.

This was the most boring class I have ever taken in my life. The material was interesting, but the way he lectured in class made me fall asleep every single day unless I had coffee in front of me. He takes absolutely FOREVER to grade papers/exams. I wish I had never taken this class.

I took this class as a group requirement, thinking i would be interesting because it was Langauges of the World. I was very wrong. He expects you to know like 40 langauges and his tests are not on concepts learned in class, but rather stupid puzzles in Turkish he expects you to understand and decipher. He is very knowledgeable, but his class sucks.

He assigns A LOT of homework, but he's a nice guy. He can be a little impatient with students at times if they're unprepared. He is extremely knowlegable about many things. If you have some time on your hands, definitely take a class of his.

Comment:
Tough class but if you study really well you'll do ok. He is a generous marker when it comes to written work, however, and respects an honest effort in any assessment. If you're struggling, don't be affraid to approach him. He's very well rounded and fluent in many languages, a very respectable feat.
