Comment:
He's extremely intelligent and interested and I found him to be one of the most caring professors I've worked with. He expects a lot from students, including the ability and the drive to learn a lot on your own, which often ends up looking like laziness or a lack of organization. For the independent and excited learner, he's perfect

i haven't had any written assignments yet so i can't judge there, but in terms of his teaching style, i think gilday is great, eh. he's extremely knowledgeable (at least about Asian religions) and his lectures are engaging, eh. he's also a very friendly and enthusiastic guy, eh, so i look forward to his class. eh.

Fascinating and extremly knowledgable, guides excellent class discussions with very little written work. A perfect class if you want to learn and don't have the need to be constantly graded.

He's not the most organized, but he's enthusiastic (I've seen him bounce, yes, bounce, in class) and knowledgeable. Also very approachable with any question about subject matter (if he doesn't know the answer he'll look it up and get back to you), and flexible with extensions etc.

Comment:
Very unclear about expectations; discussions were student led most of the time. Rarely brings any knowledge outside of the text to what we are discussing. I have no idea if I'm passing or failing the class. Some discussions have been interesting, however most of the I sit in class and wait for the hour to go by.

200 level: Class expectations unclear. Class design was ridiculous. Student led for majority of semester. Varies between unrealistic expectation our class knowledge and lack of his own depending on subject. No grades given period; 50% of the grade is due on the last day of class. The other 50% you never find out about at all til the grade comes.

Worst class at Grinnell thus far. Completely incoherent, poorly organized, unclear assignments, 4 weeks left in the semester and I still have not received a single graded assignment, ridiculous blackboard requirements, etc. . . He's a nice guy, but it is a terrible class that makes no sense

Seriously, one of teh worst profs I've had at Grinnell. :(. He seemed really amazing at first, but he doesn't teach at all and leaves discussion to wander aimlessly, then gets really frustrated when we don't say anything intelligent. Horrible, truly. What a waste of time.

mapping w/ him was the second worst class I've taken at Grinnell. Gilday is a very nice guy, very likable, but his class was incoherent. Things didn't connect. He lacks basic knowledge about religious studies (e.g. what the dome of the rock or episcopalianism are) Maybe better at higher levels?

Disorganized and often late to class (but always shows up). Doesn't give clear assignments with due dates, expectations, etc. Not an overly hard grader however. But then again, we've only done two assignments...Still, interesting and knows his stuff.
