Comment:
Dr. Engel is a very knowledgeable woman, and runs a well-structured class. Her class is very demanding, and there is a 10-15 question exam due every class based on the assigned reading. She is a harsh grader, but provides good feedback. If you do the work diligently, you will most likely do fine. It is essential to do the reading and assignments.

I wish I had given more effort in the classroom. I wish I had read 100% of the required reading because now I don't have time to read for enjoyment.

Dr. Engel was one of the few professors who graded my English papers accurately. before taking her class, I believed peppering my speech with esoteric and archaic words amidst verbosity while limiting grammatical errors was worthy of an A. I am thankful she taught me how to write; she's one of the few real educators left. Thank you, Dr. Engel.

I think this class was awesome. If you're taking this it, though, you are obviously in college and as such shouldn't expect to be coddled. All these people complaining don't understand that. She is a phenomenal teacher, I learned SO MUCH on writing and analyzing that I didn't previously know - she WANTS you to do well! She knows what she is doing!

Why all the hate? Dr. Engel's class greatly improved my critical reading and analytical writing skills, and she was always friendly with us. She enjoys watching her students IMPROVE their writing skills, so don't get discouraged if your first paper receives a low grade. My first paper was a B- and I finished with an A. Good class, I'd recommend it.

It would be amazing if someone could come up with something nice to say about her. She's condescending, arrogant, self-righteous, etc. I think the students should have the ability to remove one person from campus each semester just so I could start a movement to put her in her place: away from students and students' futures.

The only appropriate phrase for this course with this professor is "see you next Tuesday". I sincerely thin she does not like when students do well or enjoy life.

I have never before been compelled to write a negative review on a teacher until now. She talks down to students and provides difficult material without any support. She grades you harshly on essays but does not provide support to help improve your grade. The most disappointing experience of my entire schooling career. Would not recommend at all.

Do not take it as a gen ed requirement. You are graded harshly on how you analyze the literature before it is even discussed in class. Only teacher I know who does not recommend a tutor to struggling students like me.

This class was not my most enjoyable. Coming into it, I thought the material would be interesting, but after two weeks, I realized I was going to learn nothing meaningful. She clearly does not like teaching or most students. She only likes people who are fake enough to act like her. And she's not smart enough to realize how fake they really are.

Holy Jesus. What a class. Where to begin? She is ignorant and condescending. She seems to hate all but a couple girls in the class, thus proving that she hates men in her class. If you question her once, even if it was after she was unclear, she will use a tone that screams, "why on Earth are you bothering me you festering pustule?"

Dr. Engel is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. She is a rough grader with essays, but balances that out with easy reading quizzes to boost your grade. She truly cares about her students and wants them all to learn. I strongly suggest this class for any student in a pre-health major. You will learn invaluable skills.

Interesting to have in class as a professor, but extremely difficult. Gives a LOT of work and is a hard grader. Go to class and don't miss any assignments or you'll barely pass. Very interesting and intellectual person, horrid professor.

Hated her at first, but she got a bit more likable as the semester went on. Was a prospective English major until I took her class...her class convinced me otherwise; English had always been my strong point but she will rip your papers to shreds...lots of homework, but you really do learn and she's really helpful if you do seek out her help.

I'm an English Major here. The only reason I took Engel is because I was forced (transfer student problems). She is the hardest teacher I have ever had in my life. Do all the work. Dissect the essay exams. Do the papers (both position and actual essays). AND PRAY because there is no way you are getting higher than a B-.

A lot of work. Its not impossible to get an A if you do the reading exams (20 due through out the semester) and revise the essays. Classes are boring, she talks a lot and there is very little opportunity for class participation. I would not recommend this class/professor to someone looking to get humanities credit.

She is the devil. I had her for freshman english and argued with her everyday about her stupid advice. She talked about her son alot. Her son takes up a minimal part of the course. She told me i would fail miserably but now i am a venture capitalist and making 6 figures a year.

Had her for freshman seminar and a summer LCR seminar. Put simply, she's an amazing woman - very knowledgeable and always willing to help her students. Consistently offers helpful advice and goes beyond what anyone would expect from an advisor/teacher. Show her the respect she deserves and do the work - you'll get a lot out of it.
