I love Jackie. This was one of my favorite classes and the readings very engaging. I love the way she encourages an open discussion of the texts. She can ramble a bit too much sometimes but she really cares about her students and is very nice. Lots of reading but gives pretty short essay assignments. Would have loved to take another class from her.

During the pandemic, Jackie has been extremely accommodating and is going out of her way to ensure that her students are passing. Her readings are interesting, she is extremely knowledgeable of the readings, but ultimately is there for her students.

Jackie is truly a gem in History Department! I took my first ever history class with her and becomes fascinated with the beauty and rewarding nature of history. She gives amazing lectures and instructions in conference without discouraging us to participate. She boosted my confidence in chooing history major and exploring the discipline. Thank you!

The more complexity you are willing to explore, the better you will enjoy Dirks. She is interested in 20th century USA and will share as much as you can absorb. Be genuine in your desire to learn and you will prosper. Good reading selections.

I love Jackie! She cares about her students greatly and remembers what classes/struggles/interests the students are having and initiates lively conversations about them. She talks a great deal about the readings and their relevant background knowledge, which strenghthens my understandings of the materials. I enjoy her class and hope to take more!

Comment:
Jackie is definitely the worst teacher I have had at Reed. While she is clearly very intelligent, her "conferences" consist of her telling us what she thinks of the readings. She does not allow a conference-style discussion, as she is constantly interjecting and lecturing. She side steps conversations about race/minorities brought up by the class.

I really enjoyed Jackie's class. She's very approachable and friendly, and she's incredibly accommodating when it comes to giving extensions. It's true that she often broadly asks what we think of the readings, and that this can result in long, awkward pauses. But she really knows her stuff, and overall her class was a very positive experience.

Jackie helped define my knowledge of race and gender relations. She's a great resource. I would recommend going to see her during office hours if you ever feel like you're missing something, or you just need to express an idea. She's really friendly and personable. Overall, I thought this was a great class.

found her incredibly approachable and helpful both in and out of class. While she may disagree with what you say in conference, it certainly made me a better partcipant in conference. She fostered discussion through possibly disagreement and never felt like she thought less of me because of my opinion. It was her class that made me a history major

Jackie is a snob and elitist who looks down her nose, often literally, at anyone she deems beneath her, which is essentially everyone given the teacher-student environment in which she exists. Her overwhelming trait is condescension mixed with a very rigid teaching style. Not recommended.

I hated Jackie's class. She's clearly very intelligent, and had a wealth of interesting material to work with, but I found her style as a conference leader excruciating. Every class began with the open question of "What did you think of the reading?" Needless to say this did not always foster interesting discussion and awkward silences abounded.

Jackie rubbed me the wrong way at first... but I think she's a fantastic teacher. Holds students accountable, but knows her stuff. Knows how to help students get to important points in text, and how to relate to broader picture. Cares about her students. Highly recommended.

Jackie's an insightful historian and her teaching style is excellent. She expects students to contribute to class discussion and take true ownership of the material. After all, isn't that the point of a Reed conference? In short: great prof, excellent conference style, and respects Reedies for their independence.

Jackie might be a Reed institution, but she was the perfect icing on a disapointing Reed cake. Poor thesis advice, poor guidance, spent most of our meeting talking about her marital issues. Recomendations never related to my topic, and when I turned in chapters she generally commentend only on my punctuation. She rants politics for no reason.
