I love him, his lectures are truly so illuminating, but I die several deaths every time he grades something of mine. I feel like he oftentimes wants to hear what he says in class repeated in papers, and if you try to do something a little more inventive/out of the box, he'll nitpick everywhere it's "weak". His expectations maybe are too high but!!

He is SO smart and his lectures are really entertaining. Hes very animated & passionate. However he expects A LOT from students and you really have to work hard to make sure everything you turn in is your best. He does reward you though for hard work and I ended up with an A in the class even though it was my hardest this sem. I liked him a lot!!

Professor Martin is the best lecturer I've seen at BU, he's brilliant and very willing to help students and answer questions. His classes are almost 100% him talking, but they fly by and he tries to have students talk as much as possible while covering the material. He's tough and you have to work hard for an A, but I highly recommend

Really unwilling to let people talk other than himself. Also had the Audacity to say he was "disappointed" our final papers were worse than our first, even though a GLOBAL PANDEMIC happened in between the two. His Shakespeare takes were generally quite cold considering this was a 300-level class.

Take any other instructor for your Shakespeare class. Not only is he not open to interpretations, but Prof Martin passed out his faculty evaluations on a day when he knew no students would be there. Theres an entire department of amazing professors to take. Martin isnt one of them.

All college professors should conduct their classes with Martin's efficiency and clarity. He assigned two papers worth a substantial amount, provided amazing feedback, and addressed all relevant themes in the works we read during lecture. He expects a certain skill level and analytical ability to your writing.

Martin is an EXCELLENT lecturer. Never uses notes, very animated, and pretty much an expert on everything related to the class. About half the classes are discussion-based, and the other half (usually when he's introducing another text) are just lectures. I enjoyed him a lot.

Martin is by FAR the best English professor I've ever had. Very helpful and determined to help you develop your own writing style. Work load can be intense, not a lot of downtime between essays, but they're all very stimulating topics. If you have the option to take a class from him, it is in your best interest to do so. Great guy, funny and smart.

Smart and funny! Excellent leader of discussions. Engaging and chose his readings well! I never went to his office hours, but when I had a problem and emailed him he was always helpful. He is a tough grader though, and sometimes unclear. I often found myself wondering what I would have had to do to get my B+ up to an A. great moustache!

Fantastic as far as teachers go. He knows how to pick his readings and, seemingly, knows EVERYTHING about each work. His lectures are good, if a little flowery (he talks like an intellectual, which isn't really a bad thing, but it does sometimes make his lectures a bit cryptic), but he knows how to train a young mind to think and analyze well.

Brilliant - spent five minutes memorizing the names/faces of 30 students and got them all right the next go-through. Still, he ruined a class for me by publicly humiliating me for not doing the reading. I ended up dropping and not completing an English minor because of it. Expectations of excellence should probably be tempered in some cases.

Not open to student interpretation. Returns papers and the exams the next day, revealing just how much effort he puts into grading. Very austere and not engaging in office hours. Do not take him if you value your GPA.

Hands down the greatest English professor at BU! Very helpful on papers and, as stated, a lecturer that never induces boredom. A true professor who pushes you to tap your full potential and help you along the way, Professor Martin's class was simply a pleasure. It was challenging, but a true English major would not pass on this chance to improve.

Prof. Martin is incredibly brilliant and eloquent, and makes even History of Criticism an interesting class! His grading is tough, but you walk away having learned so much (not to mention seeing your writing improve dramatically). I highly recommend any of his courses. Listening to just one of his lectures makes the English major worth its while.

Close minded to student interpretation, annoying, talks too much then gets mad when you don't participate, even though he doesn't give you a chance to. Has some interesting opinions though.

Definitely the best teacher I've ever had-both at and not at BU, and my favorite one so far! He's a tough grader but always fair and you really end up learning and getting better at writing. He's absolutely brilliant and makes the material interesting! Take his class if you can-you won't regret it!
