This course is necessary for astro majors / minors, and Prof Hughes makes it feasible for all. You will need a good calc background to do well on homework which are a huge grade booster. Do well on the exams and homework and you'll do very well. Plus Prof Hughes is a very nice guy who wants everyone to do well.

Hughes definitely takes advantage of the fact he only teaches about ten kids per class by having an odd, but generous grading criteria (class probably got a B- average, but gave everybody A's). Interesting lecturer, very intensive homework assignments, and tests are fair but lots of writing and explaining things in words as opposed to calculations.

Prof Hughes is a really nice guy. the material isn't the most interesting in the world, but he has alot of overheads and visuals. he's really helpful in office hours. tests are basically just like problem sets.

His lectures were rather oriented around graphs and figures but for a visual learner it was fine. Tests were very much like the problem sets, which he pretty much walked you through if you went to his office hours. Plus he looks like Santa Claus!

His lectures are sooooooo boring. He's either deriving equations or pointing things out on graphs. He also expects you to know alot going in. If you go to office hours in a group it's okay, but going alone he makes you feel stupid.

His lectures are sooooo boring. He is my least favorite astro professor so far. And why do I care about geology in an astronomy class? The last half should be a seperate class.... and not required for astronomy majors.
