Comment:
If you are looking for an easy A, this definitely is not the class to take. However, I thoroughly enjoyed having him as a teacher. He is clearly brilliant, and although he can rush through lectures, he immediately responds to students who are struggling. If you work hard and do the homework with friends in the class, you will do well

He is a very smart man but does not know how to teach. He is very non specific in his power point presentations and gives difficult tests and hours worth of homework. Also, I have never seen him smile.

Professor Bruening is a nice guy, is very smart, and really knows what he is talking about, but the guy is not the best teacher. He ends up being very vague about topics that you will be tested critically on. Make sure to not just know the material, but know how to apply it. He will give study guides before each exam and will make accomodations.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, take this class unless it is specified for your major!!!! This is not worth a 3 credit and a multi cultural requirement. His lectures are vague. But exams very specific. The text is is unclear, dont even bother doing the assigned readings before class after Chapter 1. TA made me realize how much I didnt grasp in lecture

I don't know why he has such low marks. He makes study guides for tests, he posts homework assignments up to a week in advanced, if you need seating accommodations in the lecture hall he will help, not a lot of busy work and if theres a confusing topic he will send an email with even more material than what was in the lecture or in the book.

Yes, he is very awkward and always seems nervous but he is very smart and knows his stuff. For the honors class we only had one final paper and one final exam, and one small assignment every week and he usually gives good grades on them. Interact with him and make him feel more comfortable and the class will be more interesting.

Subject is fascinating, the way he presents it is not. The TA's were better at explaining things than the prof, although that's not really saying much (even though they're only students too, they think they have authority bc discussion section is mandatory.) Unless you need the class, spend an elective on something more worthwhile.

Good teacher; he seems to be enthusiastic about linguistics, which I didn't know was possible. He covers way too much material in his lectures though (60-90 slides in a powerpoint? jezz). He seemed to understand our frustration though and put as much humor as he could into the lesson. Watch out for the TA's though.

I loved this class. He was very clear and understanding. As you are in class, you may think that you dont understand, but when you get your homework and tests back you see that you really know a lot! He is very helpful and understanding. I definitely enjoyed his class and actually learned something. Also, it was a little boring, but it wasnt bad!

First of all, a man of beauty. Also, a professor with enthusiasm, love, and knowledge for the subject. He is a bit face paced, but not too demanding. One homework assignment per week, which you get plenty of time to work on in class with a group. Also, quizzes are not too difficult. If you are going to take LING, I highly recommend Benjamin.

The MOST BORING CLASS EVER. He makes no sense and explains it as if you are all in the doctorate program. Shows no enthusiasm and covers way too much material. The TAs would be helpful if the actually spoke English. I hated this class....don't take him if you can help it!!

I basically taught myself most of the information. He is way too faced paced in lecture to teach a 101 course and he seems to treat it like a 300level course. The TA's weren't very helpful either considering neither of them spoke good english, which is funny because what class is this?!?

The quizzes are difficult, but the final was surprisingly easy (if you review). I only did poor/decent on the group work & quizzes, but I aced the final and got a B+ in the class. Keep up with the reading and go to the TAs/tutoring center regularly - it's not impossible to get an A in the class.

Class was kind of hard, and Bruening wasn't really good at explaining things in a simple way. TA's were more helpful than he was. Quizzes are hard, but if you do good on the group work, show up all the time, and do extra credit, you get a decent grade.

Dr. Bruening was one of the most intelligent professor's I have ever had for a class. I mean he's an MIT graduate. The problem he has as a professor is his class is way over everyone's head. Try your best on his quizzes, definately do the group work, extra credit and attendence will help.
