kesler really, really knows what he's talking about when it comes to fiction. offers insightful and honest feedback that really does help improve your pieces. a bit old fashioned, but his knowledge on the subject is incredibly obvious and warming. easily the best english professor / teacher i've ever had.

Kesler is a great teacher. He's a published author and knows what he is talking about for the most part. But I will say he's old fashioned and set in his ways. He has a strong opinion on how things show be and that shows in how he grades. His feedback is debatable but he does do his best to help you succeed.

A miserable experience. Kesler does not understand fiction this deep and abiding misunderstanding colors his entire class and leaves all of his advice unintelligible and, worse, useless to any serious writer. Teach yourself how to write without his assistance.

Read the Syllabus! Don't buy the book; it is hardly used. If you miss class, make sure you turn in your work for an in class workshop. Even with an excuse, he will frown on it. I went to the writing lab, Kesler's office, and revised more than twice. I still received a B+.

He is a wonderful professor! Your writing will never be the same when you leave his class. He gives great advice and makes the workshop feel relaxed and enthusiastic. He makes it clear that he's there to help you. If you want a class that will be beneficial to your writing and that you can look forward to going to every week - take this professor!

I took Kesler for both the Poetry and Fiction writing workshops on the recommendation of another professor. I had heard a lot of complaints from students but chose to ignore them and am glad that I did. Kesler is honest and helpful. Complaints are from people who don't know how to take criticism, I really grew as a writer in both of his classes!

Professor Kesler has such a fascinating mind. I really enjoyed his feedback and his lessons. He doesn't lecture, he wants to guide his students, which I found refreshing in a writing course. He is pretty invested in the writing growth of his students and he gives lots and lots of feedback. Great experience, great professor.

Fair, honest person that dislikes vague, abstract writing in both poetry and prose. If you write abstract crap without at least minor setting, be prepared to change it. I even was reprimanded through by him for behavior in class (I heavily cursed one day) but the incident did not affect my grade at all and we have had adult discussions since then.

Great class to take if you want your writing critiqued honestly and want to improve. There are three different assignments for the year: fiction short-story, memoir, and poem. Doesn't allow genre writing (horror, mystery, etc.) for the fiction piece and forces you to write a compelling character driven story.

A complete bore of a man who doesn't bother teaching. He just hangs back and makes the students suck to one another's crappy poems. If you don't implement his recommended revisions you get a bad grade no matter how bad you disaggree. Hence no room for creativity. I only missed one day of class and i didn't learn anything new about poetry. Avoid!

He knows a lot and is always willing to help but has a very strict grading scale which leaves hardly any room for creativity. I have to butcher my poems to get an A, but it isn't that bad. I would recommend him if you need a lot of help with creative writing, he has office hours and encourages everyone to go see him. Very polite but very strict.

Kesler is a quiet, understated man who is obviously passionate about poetry. I took his advanced workshop and received an easy A. Some classmates complained he graded hard but those were the ones who rarely bothered showing up. So long as you are serious about your writing and participate in the workshops you'll be fine. I'd glady take him again.

his CRW class for ENG majosr was very helpful. The 1st part of the sem. we spent on writing excercises and the rest is workshop/revisions.The section on poetry made me mad, though. I attended the University of Cambridge in England this summer and took 3 poetry class there, all 3 of the professors taught completely opposite from Kesler.

He tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A. Perfect attendance, Revise exactly as he tells you how, follow exactly what he says...and he still wont give you an A. Hes trying to make poetry harder than it is, and for a student that has been published more than him, it's laughable. He needs to get off his high horse. Take someone else.

He is great!!! very smart and forces students to write about real life. This class made me a better writer. The people who don't like him are egotistical science fiction writers and they're just mad they didn't get a good grade because of lack of attendance.
