Comment:
As a EE undergrad in the early 90's I took several classes taught by Bill Coles, and he stands out as one of the best professors I had. He knows his stuff, goes a mile a minute, and expects a lot from his students, as well he should! He's definitely not the hand-holding type, but his job is to impart knowledge to capable students, not to coddle.

He is the worst teacher ever, he is very rude,he doesn't care about his student...I didn't learn anything in his class and trust me I am an honor student and I rarely say bad things about a teacher or a class!!!! don't ever think about taking his class

Professor Coles is the real deal. I had him for the ECE160 series in the 90's and he kicked our butts into dust. Yes, if you keep up you get a good education that sticks with you. But more importantly, I took lessons away on building a good work ethic and stick-to-it PROBLEM SOLVING. Rare in the people I interview today...

If you actually want to learn circuits and EE stuff, take this guy. If all you care about is getting through and getting a job, then don't. I learned more from Coles than anyone else in that program. He is clear in his presentation. He is helpful in office hours, as long as you aren't basically asking him to do your homework.

Wow, Bill Coles is still teaching. I had him for EECS 142 A,B,C 25 years ago and I learned more from him than any other EE prof. He was gruff and crusty but genuinely helpful during office hours. 33% score on midterms or finals was a solid A. He's my acid test when recruiting engineers. Show me A's from his classes and I will hire you!

This professor...SO many people dropped the major on account of this guy! The subject was already very difficult, and he did not seem to care whether we learned it or not. Be very cautious in asking any question--he'll chew your head off for it half of the time. His exams are really hard and he doesn't expect anyone to get higher than a C.

I had him for the lab sec. he didn't grade me. He is pretty much the Canadian version of Ku.So,at least he speaks English.Seriously,he knows way more in comparison but NOT a good teacher at all. Seems he enjoys torturing the students. Only take his class if u can ignore rude comments regarding ur very ordinary questions. Not a tolerant teacher.

He is not a good professor. Expects way too much from students. Everyone failed the first midterm. Most people failed the second midterm. He told us that if you got a 0 on both midterms, you still have a chance to do well on the final. It was BS. He made me drop my ECE major.

At first I didn't think he was too bad. However, after the second midterm, I began to realize that he just really didn't care about his students. He did not assign any relevant circuit solving homework- we just had a few computer assignments for PSPICE and MATLAB. Avoid if you can, you will suffer and probably won't even learn the material well.

By far the worse class experience I have had thus far. Class was mass slaughtered on both midterms. The second midterm was given exactly two weeks after the first. Rushed lectures and little direction. No final review by prof, instead last lecture was about "stuff" EE's should know. Unless you absolutely can't get around it, do not take this prof.

the worst professor ever!! really try to avoid this professor. Treats all students like crap, entire class failed two midterms and still believes it is our fault, goes off on tangents during class, should have review, but doesn't. TA are confused at what the professor teaches, but the TAs are awesome people that help when they can.

Just wondering why Coles and Luo Hue still teaching in UCSD. Are they too old and clumsy to teach? UCSD should have some more young knowledgable professors like Proffessor REBEIZE teach 102 & 166 AND Professor SYRUS NEMAT teachs ece 173 because these are the one that actually out there working their brain to bring future to younger generation. Coles class was beyond hard. His explanation of material was moderatly okay but lectures felt rushed. He does care about students, but his rough demeanor makes him unapproachable to those with weak stomaches. On the plus side he does cover all the material and I did learn a lot in his class, although I credit some of that to our good textbook.

I took his class and believe me guy! he is the worse professor. I just got an internship and ofcourse I am an above above average student but when I took his class I felt really bad. He only teach to the one that already know the material, which is stupid. The A student in his class is the one took the class atleast twice (or learned it over sea)

The most condesending and cocky professor I have ever met. I am in the 7th week of this class and I have nothing positive to say. I can go on forever explaining how horrible he is. Exams, lectures, office hours, etc. all make your life way more difficult than it should be. Avoid Coles at all cost.

He is very rude. In private he will use derogatory comments to students. He draws diagrams on the board and continues to draw over them quickly making note taking virtually impossible. I was a good student. He is a bad professor, more caught up in showing how smart he was than actually attempting to teach. He would put questions on the tests which weren't covered in reading or lecture or practice. Questions that would be covered in the second half of the class. This man shouldn't be allowed to teach.

He's a smart guy that knows his stuff and he knows how to explain it, but he isn't receptive to stupid questions. There's alot of material and even though he explains it well, the breakneck pace of the classes makes learning everything very difficult.

Seems like a real jerk but he's really trying to prepare students for being professional engineers some days. But he also enjoys being a jerk I think. Was glad I took the class from him, and yes he did fail half the class (and told them to consider going into sales - not making this up).
