Comment:
Kind of dry and somewhat intimidating. Tests are difficult because they test the most minute details of the course. GSI will largely determine your grade in this class. Much harder than it should be for a non-majors class. Don't take it if you haven't taken Biology recently because he doesn't really explain the basic concepts.

This class is more difficult than I anticipated, but as long as you attend lecture and study for the exams 1-2 days before, you should do fine. It's pretty interesting and Prof. Adams is decent. Not too exciting but he does have an English accent, so that's always fun. Take this if you need NS credits. oh and DO NOT buy the textbook. it is useless.

YOU HAVE TO GO TO LECTURE. The powerpoints lack all essential material you will be tested on. Not a blow off, but not impossible either. If you do the work and study, you should be fine. Papers are not too bad at all.

This professor is awesome!! I loved the class, it was always incredibly interesting and I have been able to apply what I learned to so many other things. Make sure you get a good GSI who is willing to do some extra explaining, although I'm sure you could just go to him for help as well.

Professor Adams wasn't too bad. It really sucks if you get a horrible GSI. Mine ruined my grade.

I took this class to fulfill my NS requirement, and it ended up being harder than I thought it would be. The course material is interesting, but the exams are HARD and among the most comprehensive I've ever taken (and this is my 3rd year here). The movies were usually interesting, yes, but sometimes information from them popped up on the exams.

I loved the class, I loved the teacher, and we watched a movie every Friday. Most of the test questions come from the lecture and they're very similar to the practice exams. Don't buy the book...I think we were only assigned a total of 10 pages of reading from it.

Adams' lectures were boring and too early in the morning to have an actual desire to attend. However, it was an easy class if you read the slides he posts online. Lecture is completely different and usually unrelated to discussion, which is actually interesting and more hands-on.

Adam's is a pompous man and a sub-par lecturer. The material is dry, and, on top of being stuck-up, Adams is also boring. This is a great class to take if you need an hour nap three days a week and some distribution credits as well.

Comment:
I took this class to get some NS distribution, thinking we'd be covering societal issues dealing with bio (as the title implies). Instead, I got a basic biology introduction. Only the last few weeks contained information that I didn't already know. I fell asleep a couple of times because the material was just boring and elementary.

he expects you to know things that he doesnt teach you in lecture or things that he briefly grazes over. tests ask you about the most minute and useless details in the world. discussion is the only interesting part but it wont help you on your tests. overall rating for this class: lame.

His lectures would put me to sleep, but the subject material can be interesting. A LOT more science than society, but a good course. Great way to fufill distribution requirements!

The lectures were not too interesting. The most helpful part was going over the lectures with a GSI. For the most part it is easy as long as you go to lecture and take good notes. He provides powerpoints with the lecture, so it's more important to take notes on what he says. There are two term papers that will be due but they are not too difficult.

I thought it was a good class for non-scientists. Professor Adams wasn't a bad lecturer, but wasn't overly impressive either.

I LOVED this class! I hate science...but he was able to present a basic understanding of genetics while incorporating current events in science which kept me interested. I learned a lot from this course and would recommend it to anyone not particularly interested in science.

Comment:
Main goal of the course is to give non-scientists a functional understanding of genetics - Adams does not teach science for non-scientists (letting students decide for themselves), rather, teaches his opinions as facts.
