He is very old school. I would rate him higher if he didn't spend half of the class talking about how much he dislikes our generation. Our school uses a system called d2l... which he posts assignments on... but doesn't follow what he posts as it directly contracts the syllabus. Very confusing. He is incredibly smart and knowledgeable.

Extremely rude, condescending, and overall disrespectful. Makes general assumptions about students as is not clear AT ALL about any assignment. If I knew he would be so horrible, I would've never taken a class with him again.

If you can avoid taking a class with him I highly recommend it!! he is old school and stuck in his ways which can be really challenging if you can't adjust to his specific teaching style. His expectations for assignments are not clearly explained. I went many times for help and still struggled to understand what he wanted & my grades never improved

Comment:
Took this class post-COVID and he was less than accommodating, and just seemed to get frustrated at us when basically half the class couldn't keep up. He also announced a midterm the day before it was due when it wasn't on the week by week schedule in the syllabus which was ridiculous. He knows his stuff but he is incredibly condescending and rude.

Comment:
This man was nothing but condescending and rude to the entire class. He was quick to make general assumptions about everybody that were unwarranted and had little to do with the actual lecture. Was dismissive of people's goals if they didn't fit with his point of view. Spent a lot of his energy scolding people for wrong answers instead of teaching.

Professor who only respects his point of view. Disrespectful and will try to fail anyone who disagrees with him or provides justified counter argument. His Russian politics and policy understanding is highly naive and contradictory to real events.

I took a handful of classes with Farkas. He is very professional + stern in class but coming to office hours is KEY! He wants to know you + impart his wisdom specific to your interest. Appreciates punctuality, effort, and seeking help when needed. Grading: based on your overall performance, not always clear but he'll curve it if you deserve it

I have taken multiple classes with Farkas across a wide range of disciplines. He is best when discussing Eastern Europe. I will say he can be vague at times. His grading criteria do not always make sense. However, I owe my understanding of the political world to this man. I cannot thank him enough.

Comment:
Professor Farkas is condescending not only in class but in office hours as well. With his rude attitude and remarks, he makes it seem like he does not want any student to succeed. I personally went to his office hours and he gave me no help at all but essentially scolded at me the entire time. Do not take this professor.

Don't bother. He won't help you. I went to his office hours a couple of times for questions or for further discussion on the readings. He seemed so uninterested and rushed me out. There is a condescending tone in him when he discusses Russian politics. We get that from the media already, would expect an objective view from an academic. Shameful.

Comment:
Farkas' years of experience with political science is clearly demonstrated in his lectures. However, it is also clear that he closely adheres to interpretations of these systems that are outdated. He is arrogant and isn't interested in providng support for students, or admitting his mistakes in lecutres. Critical thinkers, don't take his class.

I am a rising senior and have NEVER gotten a C in a class throughout my entire college career & his class (quizzes were impossible). He is rude, and isn't helpful at all. I chose to ignore the comments on rate my professor & couldn't get above D on his quizzes no matter how hard I tried. I HAPPILY with-drew from his class and saved my GPA.

I took his Russian Politics class online. It certainly wasn't an easy class, but it was very organized. The lectures and readings are all sorted week by week and module by module. Take good notes and pay attention to the online lectures because the module quizzes can be tricky. He is available in his office if you have ANY issues. Do the readings!

I took at least 2 classes taught by him more than 25 yrs ago. My strongest recollections have to do with his keen knowledge of the Soviet Union/Russia. Wasn't sure what his politics were, which is either a testimony to him, naïveté on my part, or both. I'm humored by the criticism of his criticism of recent generation. B/c I agree. Babies.

Farkas is an excellent professor, sometimes he can drone on during his lectures but he is incredibly knowledgeable about his field. He rewards initiative and participation, if you show you interested he will definitely bump your grade. Tests are easy and he is fair on papers but if you write garbage he has no reservations about tanking your grade.

Prof. Farkas is really engaging and knows his stuff. As long as you come to class with an interest in what he's teaching, then you will enjoy it. Go to office hours to talk. Graded on iClicker quizzes before every lecture (on topics from last lecture), 2 oral essays (1 at beginning and 1 at end), 2 written essays (at end of course), and a final.

He is an amazing teacher. He will rip your opinions a new one, simply because he wants you to think more critically. If you can't handle having your ideas challenged, don't take this class. If you're interested in learning more and can put your ego to the side for a good hour and a half, he's great. He also is one of the kindest humans alive.

His way or the highway. Does not respond to emails and won't engage student concerns if he doesn't find them to be significant. Does not pay attention to DePaul finals policy, and declares assignments "optional" but then penalizes students for not submitting. Only professor I've ever had real problems with, and only one i've ever cared to rate.

Prof. Farkas is an interesting person. He might appear intimidating at first, but that perception goes away fast. He is not considered "easy" because has high standards for all of his students, which are not difficult to prove if one puts in the effort. His classes are thought-provoking and I always came out of them with a new point of view.
