Something very wrong with her. Maybe inhaling all the chemicals over the years? Seriously. How does someone acting this like in a workplace keep a job? Worse instructor ever.

I had her as a lab instructor. She was rude, unhelpful and condescending and made me want to quit chem.

I don't know why there are SOOO many negative comments about Val on here because she is honestly very straightforward. You all must be idiots! If you get poor marks on the lab you are not being concise enough, and are not learning the knowledge you should be learning. Val makes you work for it but it's not impossible I got an A in her class.

Others have said she takes off tons of marks, this is true. She will take off .25 marks for the smallest mistakes, so be ready for red marks all over your page. On the other hand, the whole report is going to be out of something like 150 marks, so all those red -.25's really don't mean much. If you hand in just your raw data, you can pass the lab.

Arrogant. She is here to destroy you rather than help you to learn. Marks your reports as if you should know everything in HER style, while you can only learn her style from your previous reports. Sadly we cannot choose instructors of lab, and there seems to be only one instructor in organic chemistry lab. Worst lab instructor I've ever had.

Due to her tough marker stance and low idiot tolerance during labs, Val may look intimidating at first. She, however, is hilarious, approachable, and very helpful. Do take advantage of her office hours, since she will detect any lab report errors and teach you how to fix them (which should net you a few extra marks).

Hilarious and clear but a very harsh (almost ruthless) marker. She is however, very helpful. Be sure to take that to your advantage and see her outside of class.

Pros: she is hilarious, her humour has brightened up my evening lab. Very helpful when you ask her any technical questions during the lab or her office hours. Cons: the worst marker on planet earth, will take marks for the silliest of things, like not detaching your paper entirely out of the notebook or your name being in the wrong corner

Val is hilarious! She's a hard marker and will nitpick at things, but she marks her labs out of 36 so you'll still end up with the grade you deserve. She doesn't like idiots and will call you out, but is always willing to help you if you have a question.

Vivacious Val is one hell of a character. Her expectations for lab reports are quite high, since she marks them like they are about to be published. Be prepared many spend hours on your lab reports, unless you want your mark to go BOOM!

She's a nice person, but she hates idiots, and if you're an idiot, she'll make fun of you in front of the whole class. She likes to annoy idiots. Just follow her instructions. She IS, though, a MERCILESS EXECUTIONER of a marker. You can go to her and your lecture teacher and the Chemistry Help Centre for help though. Don't be an idiot.

She is.. annoying. Keeps trying to be funny to the class but always ends up looking stupid (which actually what makes us laugh). Helpful when asked but mocks students when they don't get the material/procedure of the lab. Marks ridiculously hard for a first-year course because she takes off marks on little and trivial things.

Val... Val... Val... Val is hilarious. She's fantastically helpful and nice if you make an effort (and aren't an idiot). If you do something she has told you NOT to do, or are mind-bogglingly dumb, expect to be mocked. This isn't Babychem anymore, kiddos, and if you can't take the heat turn off your Bunsen burner and go home.

While Val is a generally nice person, she definitely isn't the nicest marker. It seems like she wants students to do poorly in her class, therefore, she does not give students the support and guidance necessary to succeed.

I have Val now for 1220 labs. Contrary to what people say, I think Val is nice. She is sarcastically funny. Listen to her instructions and you'll be ok. She helps you if she can see a sincere effort. The bad part to her is her marking. She'll take off marks for small things so be careful! Otherwise, she's actually one of the better lab teachers.

OMG!!! I have her now for my chem 1120 Lab... She now does the marking while Angie does the teaching (after Jim Blackmore left all of a sudden). I wa doing so well with Jim in the labs and here comes this lady.. Suddenly, my chem lab reports are getting lower marks! She is a tough marker so watch out, won't anything slide. So much for getting an A.
