DeJonge was a great teacher, but he's leaving JMU. He managed to make all the books clear and understandable, and it was easy to use what he taught to write the 3 papers that make up your entire grade. He was an easy grader, and he would even let you come up with your own extra credit activity. Makes these stories come to life.

No required attendance. He seems really passionate about his topics but still puts me to sleep whenever I showed up. He only assigned three papers and I got a B for a really awful paper. If you take notes on his lectures and put them in your paper you'll get an A for sure.

One of the best classes of taken at JMU because it is obvious he loves these books and he wants you to love it to. He doesn't force you to read them but truly wants you to because he hopes they will mean something to you. You have to go to class, listen to him, write down what he says into an essay and you will get an A. Try to fail, I dare you.

I'm 10 years out from graduating with a French degree, and Prof. de Jonge maintains a lasting impression. I was a horrible student (at the time), but his passion and fervor for all things French lit are still so clear in my mind. To all you commenters explaining how to get by easy... Don't. This man is a genius, and has stories you wish you did.

This guy is awesome. 3 take-home tests on 3 different books that he goes over in details in class. He provides questions on the exams to answer but you can also make up your own. SO helpful and interested in his profession. Take him!!

Alex is the mannnn. So funny! Easiest class I've taken at JMU so far. Either read the books (I wouldn't) or go to class and take notes. Write down what he says and put it in your essays and you'll get As on all of your papers... I would know. 3 papers make up your grade, that's it! If you don't get an A it's because you're lazy.

TAKE HIM! Take him for anything you possibly can. I had him this semester and I can't wait to take him again next semester. He is so passionate about literature and he is by far the most interesting professor I've ever had. We read four novels in class and write a paper for each (in french or english). Couldn't be any easier.

One of the coolest professors I've ever had. You either read the novels or go to class but not both because he basically goes over the entire novel in detail in class. Three take home essay's - didn't read any of the novels and got an A. Just take notes on what he says and regurgitate it in your essays.

He is such a sweet man, and knows about everything. The class isn't that hard. There was a test on each book that was take home and we had to write several one page essays in french at the beginning of the semester.

Definitely one of the best professors I've had here. He's incredibly knowledgable and really loves the subject. Attendance isn't mandatory but its really helpful if you come because sometimes he hints at stuff to put in your papers. You're only graded on papers after each piece and if you write it in English, an A is no problem.

Best professor EVER. Take him if you can for all French Lit classes. You will learn so much about everything from him - not just about literature, because he know's EVERYTHING. He has the best stories. Ask him to tell you how he met Elizabeth Taylor or how one of his students thanked him in an Oscar acceptance speech. Amazing.

His lectures can be a bit boring, as he describes exactly what happens in the novels you read, and his analysis thereof, but the subject matter is fascinating, and there's three papers for the semester, and that's your entire grade (in a good way). Highly reccomended!

Amazingly easy and fun class. Dejonge is amazing. He keeps things interesting even though subject is dull at times. Overall really interesting except for Nieztsche. Haven't read all year but still will get above a B in the class. Just go to class and he tells you every detail.

Such an interesting man!! He tends to get off subject often, but he always talks about something interesting and sometimes even more useful than the book itself. If you ever have the opportunity to take one of his classes, do it!

GREAT PROFESSOR. no attendance, all he does in class is tell you what happened in the books. BSed my midterm, final, and term paper, rarely went to class, didn't read at all and still got a B+. He is an extremely generous grader, and actually very interesting to listen to. TAKE THE CLASS

This class will annoy you, I really wanna burn Man of Straw. But if your a good BSer when it comes to writing you should be fine. I didn't read the books or go to class every single time and still got an A-. #1 advice is pay attention in class and take notes. Nice guy
