Awesome prof!very knowledgable in his field and can pretty much answer any question you throw his way. His exams are predictable, in-fact if you pay attention to class he will hint at the questions that will be on them. both 340 and 540 are mathematical courses. Videos are on youtube for later viewing.

I took CPSC 340 with Nando & did really well but CPSC 540 was very different - the assignments were quite difficult and the exam was unfair! That's because Prof. de Freitas was quite unclear as to what material was going to be on the exam. He's pretty tricky and I dislike tricks!

CPSC 340 was an exciting and rigorous course. The homework was fun: we implemented a very simple search engine and built classifiers for Wikipedia articles. The course is difficult and highly mathematical, but it's definitely worth taking. Dr. De Freitas is clear and is willing to take time to explain the material to you.

This guy rocks! After taking machine learning in his class I want to go back and take linear all over again... when random people start attending your class because they are interested in taking it with him next term... that tells you something... a teacher who wants the students to learn...

By far, worst class i've ever experienced. Course notes are too general, homework is in no way similar to the examples in class, exams are in no way similar to homework, and tutorials present examples that seem to be way out of the scope of the course.

final exam was nothing similar to assignments and lectures (although he said he did put an assignment question in the final). 1/3 of the class failed the final exam and 17% of the class failed the course in the end.
