Comment:
I took Professor Syler's online American Roots Music course this semester and it was a breeze! It was asynchronous (no meeting times) so I just had to complete the quizzes for each powerpoint by the end of the semester. The professor seems like a nice man who knows what he's teaching and I'm glad I chose this course for my creative arts credit.

Professor Syler is passionate about music and the lecture can drag on if you are not interested in the history of music. However, if you take notes on the handout he gives you and study those notes, you will definitely get an A. I took this class along with a heavy class load and didn't have to worry about this class. Good luck!

I loved taking this class Fall 2019. Mr. Syler was an excellent professor. I never thought I would learn so much about so many different things taking a Roots Music class. I would certainly take a class with Mr. Syler again. If you show up, take notes, study for the tests, then you certainly will get a good grade. One of my fav class/prof ever!

the only thing that made me mad about this guy is that he doesnt give 100s on essays. Other than that, really easy class: 3 tests, 2 essays, & a group project all weighted evenly.

Very easy, show up and take notes and you will do well. No textbook this semester. Exams are easy and straight from the lecture notes. Very laidback class, I didn't have to worry about it all semester. Syler is really cool and a good professor. The material is interesting as well, I actually enjoyed coming to class. I definitely recommend

No book this semester. Lots of note taking. Lets you take pictures of the notes after class. More of a history of music class than listening to music class. Lots of people, places, and dates to know. Helps a lot after class. I spent half a semester coloring in his class and still did well. Go to the concerts and write the papers ASAP.

Professor Syler is a good professor. Tests are reasonably challenging. 2 concert attendances on campus with an easy one page paper for both. You listen to parts of a lot of songs each class. Definitely and easy class to get an A or B in without too much effort. Just show up, take notes, and you will pass.

He is an alright teacher, just read and know the material because the test were a little difficult, would include things he breifly went over in class and expect us to just know certain things. Had to work for the grade.

It's hard not to make an A in this class. I took this class for my arts credit. Stopped printing the book so tests were all lecture based and he puts questions on the tests asking for years. He's very anally retentive. He'll call you out about eating in class even something small like yogurt. Says he can't look at someone's face while they eat.

Professor Syler was really cool. Had him 8:30AM and he understood that most of us were still half asleep. Class consisted of 1 midterm, 1 final, 6 online quizzes, 4 concert attendances, 1 essay, 1 project. No extra credit but you don't need it as long as you do well on the exams, quizzes and attend the concerts. Not a difficult class, don't be lazy

Cool guy. The material was repetitive, but he made it interesting. Although I wish he played tunes on the piano more often because he was good. No textbook. Tests were straight forward, and the essay wasn't too difficult. Overall class was a nice break from other subjects. Made me interested in music theory again.

Tests are fairly easy; basic music course. Harsh grader on essay/final project. Only aspect of the class where you have to be lights out with your work. Otherwise, fairly easy A.

I love this guy! He is a master at music and is so funny. He even gave the people who were have the most trouble special attention. Do not be late or miss a lot though, he has no sympathy for those kind of people. Take any class by him!

Really nice and helpful! He is an actual composer which I think makes the class really great. He never asks too much of students and if you do the work he asks it's a very easy class. He uses the Socratic teaching method so if you are uncomfortable answering questions then that would be the only reason to not take him.
