Professor Krause is amazing! The lectures are definitely engaging, requiring one to have done the readings beforehand. When it comes to providing feedback, he is readily available and willing to go above and beyond to strengthen your writing. If I'm not mistaken he's retiring soon, so while he's still here, take one of his courses.

Paul is an excellent prof! His lectures are worth listening to and participating in, even through there are no actual tests on what he talks about In fact there are no test at all! This is a writing intensive class, but can be easily managed. I would 100% recommend taking any class with this prof!!

Paul has really opened my eyes towards another perspective on American History which is really rare for a professor to do. He's also highly concerned for the students' well being so take advantage of his office hours as he'll go beyond to help you. Also the TA's were a gem!!

Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Caring, compassionate, inspiring, and approachable. He knows his stuff. He creates such a positive learning environment and really cares about what you have to say. He also takes student feedback really seriously and will follow constructive criticism. Could not recommend him enough.

I'm not interested in US history but when I completed HIST 334 in Term 1, I immediately registered in HIST 335 for Term 2 - that's how great my experience was with Paul. If you just want to pass, it's not hard get a B. But if you want to do well and actually learn something, Paul will do everything in his power to help you do so. Such a nice guy.

This was my second class with Professor Krause. The man has done more for my academic career than anyone else at UBC. I felt like I had no worth while skill set when I first took a class with him. Not only did he make me feel smart again, he personally helped me each step of the way. The man cares about so much about his students. Krause is awesome

I'm not really sure what to think. On one hand he REALLY likes to hear himself talk and give his opinion and he's a bit self-important. However, he is also very, very kind and if you run into problems he's there for you. There was no midterm and no final. Grade is based on attendance (25%), group project (35%), and 2 final essays (40%).

One of the best professors I've ever had. He's a hard marker but he challenged me to do so much better with my essays, and showed me how patiently and very nicely. Not arrogant at all. He's also very understanding and pretty fun to hang out with during office hours.

One of the most interesting classes I've taken at UBC. Went into the class knowing next to nothing about American history, but feel quite knowledgable on the post-Civil War era now. He xpects a lot from his students, but you'll be rewarded for attending class and being engaged.

He gives everybody chances to re write essays, reading responses finals. While I think this is generous it completely slams the people who work hard to hand everything in on time. I don't think its fair especially at a University level. That being said he is passionate about the subject and an engaging speaker.

I just finished African American History and I can honestly say that professor Krause is the best prof I have ever had! He has high expectations and his class is difficult and reading intensive, but I came out of it feeling like I had received an education, not just finished a class to add to my degree. Highly recommended !!

I love Paul. He has really (I mean REALLY) challenged me to improve my writing, which not many professors do. Before I took his class, I was concerned based on these reviews. He is definitely in-your-face, but not "arrogant" or "rude." He's actually one of the more humble academics I've met. Don't be scared. You won't regret taking his class.

best class i've ever had, and the best prof. if you're interested in the material, and you like independent thinking and appreciate a different approach to learning...he's great. really encourages you to think about a lot of issues which other classes/profs ignore. not a hard marker at all if you write well and are interested in the readings/topics

I have now taken three classes with Paul, including my majors seminar. I don't understand these other people. If you put in the work, you will do well. Yes, he is a tough marker...but always allows re-writes and really wants to help you. If you are lazy, get out of UBC. Paul is understanding and the best professor I have had at UBC.

I didn't do so well in this class, but Paul was an amazing teacher. Discussions were interesting, and the lectures made me think hard about all kinds of things. There was a problem student who made some trouble but it didnt matter too much.

I have taken 2 courses with kraus, and he has been great. Maybe the best prof i ever had at UBC. In both classes, there was one male who acted out and made it difficulkt for us, esp. krause. He deserves a medal for how he coped with the red-head duded this year.

Comment:
Professor Krause is perhaps the most arrogant, self indulgent professor I have come across in my academic life. H447A had the potential to be a very interesting and fulfilling course, and to be fair, Krause is an interesting lecturer. But his sharp condescension and self righteous moralizing in and out of class completely ruined the experience.

Comment:
The subject matter of this course was fascinating and enjoyable. However, it is a difficult class. Papers are hard, marked very critically. Do not take this course if you are worried about your GPA. It should be a 500 level course.
