C- on 1st ex w/ him, then I showed up, took notes & memorized. A- overall so you can recover if you show him effort. Go to office hours, get to know him: nice, brilliant, & best prof for WW2 buffs. Ended up taking all of his classes, all A's. Went to law school& his class prepped me for cold-calling & limited exams that count as your entire grade

I thought his class was enjoyable, fun and interesting. Its refreshing to be able to just listen and learn rather than worry about little knick knack assignments every day like with most professors.

Polsky explains the material in depth. However, he does not use power points. You must write down everything he say because you do not know what will be on the test. You HAVE to pay attention and ATTEND class everyday. You don't have to buy the textbooks. There are only 3 exams. You should study. You may want to get a tutor for this class.

Polsky by far is my favorite professor. He will berate you for wrong answers but that's his way of being funny and connecting with students. I've had him 5 times. 3 tests-20 questions. Go to class and take notes (dates, names, countries, policies). You don't need the textbook. Tests aren't hard like everyone keeps saying. Study and you'll be fine.

Probably the only person you'll meet from the Soviet Union times. Extremely intelligent, makes you work for your grade. Says attendance is calculated into your grade but not anywhere to be found. Grade is on 3 tests only. Hard, very hard tests. Pay attention and take good notes. Be ready.

I really want to give him a higher rating, but his grading system just kills the class for me. Its graded on only 3 quizzes so theres little room for error. While I liked his lectures (Very funny guy) I can see why most people would find him annoying; he'll ridicule really wrong answers, and he calls on people randomly.

Polsky says everything is important during class which makes it very difficult to study for his exams which 3 of them make up 90% of your grade. Virtually anything he talks about could be on the exams. He will make fun of you if you get anything wrong in class. Avoid this class if possible. Structured very poorly, you'll be lucky to get a B

Polsky is a great guy but if you are not a person who can take simple question and answer tests, it is not a class for you. If you do not know the answer, you don't have hope of knowing it. There are only 3 tests throughout the entire semester, so if you don't do well on one of them your grade can easily drop. If you don't have to take it don't.

Your entire grade is based off of 60 questions. 3 exams counting the final, 20 questions each, no extra credit opportunities. If you fail one good luck digging yourself out. He is a very funny guy with a dry sense of humor. Exams are names, dates, countries, and policies. Write down everything he says you have no idea what could be on the test

So, you have to have thick skin and participate knowing you'll get destroyed on occasion. If you show interest and do some reading before lectures you'll be on his good side. Only the lecture is on the tests tho the text can be interesting. Its all rope memorization. And from what Ive heard he teaches the same material in all classes. Its all WW2.

He's funny and the class itself is interesting, but he only gives three exams all semester and they're basically your entire grade. If you fail one, you're screwed. He makes each exam the exact same questions, but he doesn't tell you that. Don't waste your time studying the new material because he won't ask you it. Wish I knew that in the beginning

Read all these reviews thinking I'd love Polsky, so I went into the class eager to see his teaching, but I was severely disappointed. He tends to be redundant in what he says and he isn't thorough enough in topics leaving you unclear. He also often wastes time jokingly up-braiding students. His lectures have no organization either. Don't take this!

I took many classes with Polsky. The guy has an encyclopedic knowledge of 20th century global affairs. Truly remarkable. Now, in law school, I find myself benefiting from what I learned in his class. Also, no need to readlisten to lectures and study with wikipedia. DOWNSIDES: toonnss of overlap between his classes, and scant discussion of theory.

Polsky is intimidating at first but he is a fantastic teacher. You need to show up to class, BE ON TIME, write down everything he says in lecture, and study hard. By no means is it easy but I guarantee you will learn A LOT, especially if you are actually interested in the material. I bought the books but never opened them. B+ and taking him again.

Not the most supportive, but a hilarious guy once you get his humor. Take good notes and write everything down Tests are simple (dates, people, policies, countries). Lots of notes and he basically says everything we go over is on every test (false). Make friends in the class & study together, be good at memorizing dates and stuff and it's an easy A

Polsky taught me more about international relations than any other professor! He's extremely intelligent, but very tough if you're not good at memorizing specific dates and people. Take this class if you're willing to work hard and are generally interested in history. Love him!

Polsky is a tough course, the notes for the most part are based on what he says but he's hard to understand. If you don't plan on coming to class often then don't bother. still he's a nice guy, clearly knows his stuff, and his test weren't unfair just doesn't give you an idea of what will be asked.

I love Polsky! He terrified me the first day of class I thought he was mean and I couldn't understand his accent, but I ended up loving his dry sense of humor and his accent became more understandable with time. Definitely an extremely challenging professor to get an A, but if you read and attend class it's easy to get a B or a C

Don't get me wrong, I love Polsky -- but his old school method needs to be revised. His sense of humor is great and he is a living encyclopedia, but he needs to provide more opportunities for grades. Three blue book tests is a bit unfair. If he gave more opportunities for students to prove themselves, I think his method would be more reasonable.
