I'm so thankful I have her as my literature professor. The books she gave made me, an international student, feel more connected to Canada. My favorite book from this class is Marrow Theives. This is probably the most meaningful class I took this year. I know I'm weaker than most students in writing, but her assignments allow me to do well in class

One of my favourite courses. A bit intimidating at first, but she's actually very caring and considerate of people's different backgrounds. Paying attention in class really helped with doing well on the 2 papers, but no lecture slides - you have to take good notes! She was great at facilitating discussion and genuinely cares for students wellbeing.

While a graduate student, I took a course with her. The worst class I have ever taken in my entire university career. Harsh feedback and intimidating lectures. Weir has no qualms about telling students in class that their ideas/assignments were bad or wrong, and killed discussions. If you care about your mental health or your gpa, AVOID THIS PROF.

Dr. Weir is really knowledgeable in her field, and that really shows in this course. Even if you don't have a particular interest in Indigenous studies, you will likely still find the content of this class interesting. She rarely reads off her slides so it's important to take notes throughout the semester, to prep for the final. Takes attendance!

Dr. Weir's lectures are really interesting. She's passionate about what she teaches. She's available for help after class and during office hours. She really helped me improve my writing. If you put in the effort you will get a solid grade.

Comment:
Taking ENGL409 with Dr. Weir was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but also the most rewarding. It was a theory course, so not much literature, so she expects you to read a lot and come to your own understanding of the text. There is no cookie cutter grade scheme, just as long as you can argue for your case well. Would have her again

I hate english but this course wasn't bad. The lectures can be boring, but as long as you attend Professor Weir provides a lot of information and key points that will be on the final. She's way more helpful than you think, if you ever need help... ASK she's super helpful. She seems like a tough prof but she's not, go chat with her she's so nice.

The reading list is great but her lectures are a bit boring. She tends to ramble and use up the class time on detailed analysis of minutia, but doesn't always address the entirety of the text. Nice prof overall, but bring some extra homework to do during class time. Attendance is taken every day, so show up physically if you can't show up mentally.

No joke, her lectures are so boring. 90% of the time she will go off topic and talk about indigenous related material. However the reading list was diverse and interesting. 1 in class assignment, 1 at home essay, 1 term paper and finally the final exam. attendance is taken for every class, go to the discussion classes instead.

I would recommend this class to all students considering a future major in English or FNIS. The reading list was fabulous, and she isn't afraid to bring real issues to the table rather than theoretical analysis of books written by the usual old white guys. I really got so much out of this class.

She was very disorganized the whole semester. The topics we discussed were pretty heavy and I think it may have helped had the material been presented in a way that we could have engaged with. The rambles and tangents were not helpful, and I wish we talked about the books in more detail. Very self-righteous and hostile.

Loved the readings, but dreaded lectures. Dr. Weir didn't make me feel respected. (She even discouraged English majors in the class to pursue something else, saying that we would only become Starbucks baristas or high school teachers.) She was unclear in her expectations for assignments and tended to go off topic.

Wanted to love her but couldn't. She is passionate and brilliant, but her unclear daily tangents and harsh forms of "constructive" criticism (she is not afraid to tell the class that we don't know how to write) made her unapproachable. The reading list was excellent and the course would have been a favourite of mine, if not for her teaching style.

She is one of the worst profs I've had. She is VERY opinionated and does not handle ideas/questions from students that oppose her views. She goes on rants frequently that do not relate to the texts we are learning. I did not learn a thing from this class & I would have to tune out so that I wouldn't make a facial expression that she could pick on.

She's amazing! Such a brilliant woman who shows you the path to brilliance. Teaches you how to analyze complex texts and cares about your understanding of her comments. She's really interested in your learning and is very impressed when you respond to her suggestions. Lectures are a privilege to go to. Just fantastic!

Goes on constant rants and hardly relates to the brilliant readings she's assigned. Class topics are interesting but she is a frustrating person to listen to. Same lectures (or rants) happen throughout the course. Occasional disrespectful comments in response to students which is highly upsetting.
