Comment:
I don't even have this man as my professor but he has written the most atrocious textbook that most of the 2415 classes use. In the book steps are skipped, math concepts are explained in conversational english, notation is changed WITHIN THE SAME EXAMPLE, and poor formatting is used. Oh yeah, also, HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED FROM THE BOOK.

Dr. Baker is great at explaining things and always willing to help. He uses his own textbook which has 1 example per chapter. I really hate it when professors think that their class is the most important in the world. This class was required for my major (Mech Engineering). He makes homework and tests immensely difficult unnecessarily.

Comment:
Dr. Baker's class was odd compared to many others. Homework is rather substantial, and takes a lot of time. If you can do the homework, you will be fine on the exams. He is a very good lecturer, and is very helpful one on one. I have used content from this class in other classes, and I knew it really well. Great teacher!

He's knows his material extremely well. He offers office hours, tutors, post notes online, screencasts some homework solutions, and will literally do anything to help students succeed. His homeworks are very long and hard but you do learn the material well from them.

Comment:
Dr Baker is an abstract thinker and he teaches thus. The book is his own creation and has some faults--mostly a lack of examples (only 1 per section). Baker makes his class seem harder than he grades. The material is hard, the homework is a death sentences, the quizzes are a pain and he's picky about 'em. But the exams are fair and easy.

Dr. Baker is the best professor I have ever had. GO to office hours. He will learn your name and is very willing to help out. His class is not easy. The homework is much harder than the exams but if you struggle through the homework each week, the exams will be easy. I have learned more from this class than I have in any other class I have taken.

Dr Baker is very helpful in office hours, however, his homeworks are very difficult and I would spend roughly 15 hours a week on homework. Also, the only examples you will get from him are those in lecture-which are exactly the problems in his book. This class is taught in an interesting manner but is not suitable for people with not busy schedules

This is the best professor I have ever had! He is really passionate and knows what he is saying. Yes, the class is hard. Deal with it! If you try hard, you will get an A and know the material. Go to office hours, he will work out any problem you ask step by step!

Very different than any other math class that i have taken. Beware that that textbook he wrote himself have no examples whatsoever. So if you are used to the traditional style of math learning go for another teacher. However if you really like to understand math get his class.

Great class and a great professor. One of the best at Ohio State. He does kind of answer questions condescendingly though. Yes, his book really only goes in depth on one example per concept, but I didn't find it hard to apply that to other problems. Don't expect things to get any easier. Also, TAKE ADVANTAGE of the videos he posts on Carmen.

Baker is a teacher like no other. He redefines the way math was taught and cuts out theoretical stuff that any science or engineering major does not care about or need to know. His class is very difficult and it will make no sense until a "light bulb moment." He's very forthcoming about it and the class is very fair. Great teacher to have for 415.

Baker is easily one of the best professors I've had so far. The material can be hard, but if you're willing to put the work into it, he will make sure that you learn your stuff. I really liked how he taught the class in a way that engineers will actually use. After taking the course, I think every math/science class should be taught in this way.

The worst class I've taken. The book that he wrote himself doesn't have enough examples and answers to show you where your mistakes are.

Text book is horrible. Many typos and few examples. Also, doesn't cover a lot of basic diff eq techniques. I found his lecture style annoying too. He likes to talk about how little you seem to know. The most "formulaic" math class Ive ever taken also. Because he gives so few examples, his test are regenerations of what you learn in class.

Great sense of humor, but the class is absolutely impossible! The textbook, which he wrote, is confusingly worded and the examples aren't clear, making homework impossible. He lectures straight from the book, so you're screwed if you don't understand it. My TA was absolutely useless, too. She couldn't even do the homework problems.

Awful teacher. I recommend you don't take his class. He rambles about his alcoholism and wrote his own crappy, confusing book which contains no examples. If you take him, hope he isn't your TA too like with me. Go to somebody else's office hours for questions.

His class isn't easy, but if you're an engineer looking for a professor who's going to teach you what's actually useful (not proofs), he spent several years working as an engineer and teaches you stuff that is actually useful in a practical way. Very good lecturer.

Quite difficult if you aren't a math genius, especially when you get into partial diff eqs. His "lecture notes" that act as the textbook are the exact same as his lectures, so if you don't understand him then, you won't be able to go to the lecture notes for help. Terrible questions (one answer was "Ha! Ha!"). Pretty good lecturer, though. Amusing.

An absolutely fantastic instructor. I agree with other comments that he does not coddle his students but he is genuinely very interested in helping students learn and actually understand diff. eqns. If you have problems, just ask him for help and he will go out of his way to make sure you understand the concepts.
