Two labs per week, 5 exams and that is your grade. Speaks monotone and knows the stuff so well it's hard for him to convey it to the class. Not much interaction with students. Will help if you approach with a question. Chem is already a tough course, need a teacher who enjoys the teaching part of it to make it a successful course. He's not one.

Took this a few semesters ago. Grade based on exams (80% IIRC) & labs (20%). No extra credit whatsoever. Allowed retake of 1 exam, whichever you wanted. If retake score was lower, it replaced original higher score - so be careful. Exams were not hard but were long & required speed in calcs. Grading was fair. Practice old exams to prepare for speed.

Teacher technically knows his stuff. Does not convey it well. He will STEAL points on labs no matter how accurate you are. His tests are not straight forward, know your stuff. Stay awake, he is monotone, dont ask questions you expect answers for. The format of the lab reports are more important than the labs themselves.

He makes something so easy, so difficult the way he teaches and you ask him something he never gives an answer. Some teachers do everything to help but he gives little effort for your success. Hes a ridiculous grader and his test are worded in a confusing way that even if you know it, your gonna be wrong. I dont even think he know chemistry.

Jose Villarreal is very intelligent and knows his chemistry! His tests are designed to see if you really understand, so you actually have to do some work in this class. Very helpful, patient, and competent (and hot).

I can tell from his montone and the instructors that he hires, I'll never waste another $ @ Cuyamaca in the Chem dept. Do you sometimes suspectn that some instructors have people (like family, or themselves) write their reviews? I suspect it here- one meeting w/him and I can tell whose blowing smoke at me.

A fabulous professor. Objective. Patient. Willing to spend time discussing chemistry with students after the class period has ended. Gives the students plenty of homework problems with which to prepare for the exams. Did not give a final exam.

Only 9 left in the class out of maybe 20, and I have to withdraw. Exam questions are always more difficult than the homework problems. I've lost a great deal of confidence. I had an A in Chem 115. Exams are not fair for an introductory level class. Need a strong Chem background to do well with this teacher.

The WORST teacher I've ever had the misfortune of taking. He made me HATE chemistry. I would strongly recomend taking chemistry with Dirbas or Oakes at Grossmont. Everyone says it's harder at Grossmont, but Villarreal had no problem failing more than half the class on every test. He is extremely boring to listen to and he grades unfairly.

This is a true college level class where slackers will fail. Prof. V. does not coddle you but does mentor and TEACH those who go after the knowledge. This is not showing favortism but reality. The squeaky wheel gets the grease people. Don't let his supposed "geeky" or "boring" behavior keep you from gaining knowldge and mentoring!

Nice guy. Although Organic Chemistry is not an easy subject, he made it pretty easy to understand. Straightforward about what is expected, and ALWAYS available and willing to give extra help. Don't be afraid to take this class, not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
