John Poch - Texas Tech University

Professor: John Poch

Overview:
  • Course: ENGL2305
  • Grade Received: B
  • Overall Rating: 1.0
  • Course Difficulty: 5.0
  • For Credit: Yes

  • Attendance: Mandatory
Comment:
Poch inadvertently discouraged students from contributing to discussions by dismissing or criticizing commentary. His feedback was never helpful and his instructions vague. He expected everyone to know what to do without actually teaching anything and graded unfairly tough even though this course is intro-level. ¾ of his students dropped the class.

Dr. Poch makes this class a lot more difficult than it needs to be. He is a tough grader and does not give you a lot of information about how you can improve your writing. More specifically, he states what you are doing incorrectly, without explaining what you should do differently to deem a good grade.

Dr. Poch is a great professor overall. He is sometimes a bit rough around the edges, but all of his criticism is just so you will do better in the class. Don't skip and if you talk more in class he will be more keen for a better grade.

Comment:
Dr. Poch is fantastic. Although at times his class is frustrating and difficult, he only challenges to improve our writing. He's very blunt and doesn't water-down his criticism, which is good if you actually want to write better poems. Try not to get offended by his abrupt nature, I think he's tough because he cares. He's a bit unorganized too.

Dr. Poch is a wonderful professor. I am not going to sit here and say that this class is an "easy A" because it is not. However he definitely cares about his students and their success in his class, so show up and give it your all because he will give you his all as well. I would take Dr. Poch again in a heartbeat. He is a great person and educator

Poch is awesome. He offers valuable insight into poems that can be applied to everyday life. While his class is tough, he is more than willing to offer feedback on your work or help you understand a concept. Be sure to complete the readings before class so you can actively participate in the discussion.

Poch is tough, but if you put in the effort your grade reflects it. He's an extremely tough and particular grader but only asks for a few things: no passive voice, and make a real argument. Do that and he really gives you a meaningful learning experience

the class itself is not hard, but he really makes it more difficult than it has to be. You write 5 papers with a mid term and final. He never tells you how to make your papers better, but just tells you they're not good enough. I've tried to meet with him in his office and he doesn't even show up. Not very helpful.

Hated poetry going into the class, but can understand it and somewhat like it now. Took him for intersession course in Junction, TX. He is one of the most amazing teacher I've ever had! He will work with you if you show you are trying. My poems weren't really good, but he saw that I put effort into the class. Definitely NOT a blow off class!

If you're looking for a blow off poetry class, this isn't it. He's strange, but absolutely knows what he's talking about. Can be slightly offensive, but will critique your work honestly and truly take the time and energy to understand what you're doing. I would only recommend the class to people who are truly interested in becoming better poets.

Great professor. He has high expectations, but he is such a laid-back and likeable guy that he almost makes you _want_ to meet the expectations. I would take a class with Dr. Poch again in a heartbeat.
