Writes mile long instructions and hides the actual instructions somewhere within his rambling. five pages to get to the point. Had a total different view point on a subject we were covering and I put that in a paper and he said I was wrong. Explains stuff better in person so maybe not online would make it better. F this class though.

Prof Marks expects you to just understand what he is covering. There really isn't any direction with his course. It is super frustrating as well because he is vague and doesn't give help or constructive feedback when it is needed.

The class was titled topics in Science Fiction. LIttle did I know I was actually walking into topics in pure SASS. I've seen animals get eaten alive on the National Geographic channel, and that was still less harsh than the comments he made on my papers. I bet this guy probably laughs at the part in the Lion King where Mufasa dies.

Professor Marks is always open to answering questions, which is very helpful considering he makes his class very confusing. Most of the time I found him to ramble on about assignments, but not give clear instructions. His grading is tough, but fair for the most part. However, the group projects he does are not effective for an online class.

Marks like to rant a lot. So many of his assignments were simple but he made them so complicated and wrote essays about what he required for assignments for the online course. Likes to hear himself talk so to speak.

One of my least favorite classes I've ever taken. There is no actual teaching here, just extremely dense (and often confusing and unnecessary) written lessons from the prof. Never knew what was expected on assignments because he was so unclear. Way too tough on grading. We received high praise on a project, but our grade was significantly lower.

Worst class ever. Takes forever to grade, 7 weeks for one assignment, still waiting on the others. He doesn't explain things clearly and when you ask for clarification he is extremely condescending. You will pay for this class to use Google to learn about genres. If you want to learn about persuasive and analytic writing, do not take his class!

Decent guy but a terrible grader. Instructions for the online course materials are confusing, and he slashes up your work pretty harshly if you didn't give him exactly the answers he's looking for on tests and forums. One of the books he had us read was really misogynistic, but he refused to hear my argument against it.

So I've always been an English buff, and once I heard that the course was going to be focused on the death penalty I was stoked. Marks was completely uninvolved and often gave things back extremely late. Does strange things like give 100's on preliminary things, but then C's on the actual paper. I felt totally at a loss as a writer.

Online class - Vampire lit - how cool! English is my thing so I wanted so much to enjoy this course. I wrote my exams and felt confident - but then I would get the comments back and man, were they harsh. I couldn't understand why Marks couldn't be more openminded to my interpretation of the texts. English as subjective? I guess Marks didn't know

I was one of the best writers in my high school honors classes.... Then I took Alan's class and I immediately lost confidence. He's a tough grader, and you have to know exactly what he's looking for in your essays, otherwise you're screwed.

I took him for topics in literature online and the class was really interesting. Weekly postings and responses are required and he adds to them if the class misses a major point. Not much interaction with him in an online course but its not a bad thing. If you do need him he will answer any question you have in a timely manner.

Took his online class and learned about the death penalty but nothing about analytical or persuasive writing. Alan Marks's opinions ARE fact, and if you don't agree, you must be illogical. Completely artless grading. I think a robot graded some of my papers. If anything this class made me lose confidence as a writer

before taking his class i was one of the best writers in my class.. ive never gotten below an A- in english.. and i got a B in his class. The grading is awful and not consistant. The whole class was on capital punishment, which after awhile.. sucked!... seriously Alan, throw a couple positive comments in a paper.. i hated myself during this class.

Great guy. Jack the Ripper subject very interesting, especially over the other ENG 101 sections. Helpful, friendly and fun. Very approachable and does a good job answering your questions. Explains concepts and expectations for papers very clearly. Got mostly B's and one A on my papers.

Good guy, more interesting subject of Jack the Ripper than all the other ENG 101 courses. Clear enough so you can figure things out for yourslef.
