Spends most lectures sharing anecdotal stories rather than the lesson content. Doesn't really work well with students in terms of helping them with things in and out of their control. Don't take if trying to learn something other than Jazz Trombone

McFalls would work better as a private teacher but struggles as a lecturer as he would just share anecdotal stories for most of the class instead of lecturing. Don't take if you want to learn something other than jazz trombone.

Took his history of jazz class - arguably the best college course I have ever taken. He is so passionate and enthusiastic about the subject that I could listen to him speak about it all day. I am biased because I enjoy music, but even if you don't this class is still worth it because he is a gem of a professor.

Jim's overview of the music industry is insightful and entertaining at the same time. You can't miss class much but you likely wouldn't want to skip this class anyways. You'll need to study for exams but the material will actually help you later in life. If you have a problem, he is available. I don't know any people who did not like this class.

McFalls is the man. His class is fun because he is so passionate about what he's teaching and a genuinely nice guy. He doesn't take it too seriously for what it is, if you try you should get an A.

Professor McFalls would be a great mentor but hes not the best professor. He would spend most it the class talking and telling stories about himself. The last 5-15 he crams all of the lecture. He also doesnt not give study guide or study sessions so test can be very difficult if you are not self teaching your self throughout the course.

History of Jazz is by far my favorite class I've taken in college. The subject matter is very interesting and covers the lives of individual singers as well as the transformation of the genre. He cares about his students and makes class fun to attend.

He made the class extremely interesting for non majors. The tests are a little hard, but I think he knows that as he grades pretty lightly on all other assignments.

McFalls is the best professor in the music dept. This guy goes out of his way to help. Don't expect a handout, but if you show him you are dedicated, he will bend over backwards for you. Also, he has chops from here until kingdom come. It's just a shame he plays the trombone. haha

McFalls is awesome, and hella attractive for an older guy. He is SO passionate about Jazz, that he really makes you interested in the subject. He assigns 4 chapter reviews, 2 concert reviews (like seeing a concert on campus), 1 research paper and 1 group project. It sounds like a lot, but it's a breeze. He is a stickler for grammar though. Take it!

LOVE HIM!! He's so passionate about jazz and understands that not everyone in the world is, but he does his best to teach you what you need to know in order to pass the class. Very outgoing, never a boring class. One group project, two jazz concert reviews, one short paper

Dr. McFalls is awesome! I had no interest in jazz whatsoever, and he made it interesting for a non-music major class. You have to write some papers, make a cd, and take notes almost every day, but he's really good about teaching jazz history.

TAKE THIS CLASS. Pay attention and take notes and you will get an A. Funny guy, passionate about his field, teaching, and what students are doing. Does make you attend a TU concert, but I actually enjoyed it - go to see him with the Big Band. You can only miss two classes, but you will not want to miss this one. A break in your day with laughs!

Comment:
Worst teacher I have ever had. Never have I been swayed to hate jazz so much. Jim is extremely rude and disrespectful to his other students. He constantly makes fun of his "non-major" class and reads their work to the class for laughs. Hardly teaches- mostly talks about himself and how "great" he is. Tells class not to write about Bessie Smith.. hm
